anybody else holiday exclusively in the UK? plenty to see on these Isles for me what's people's thoughts?
I increasingly have found the whole airport hassle stressful. And my wife can’t walk far these days, so she’s happy sitting reading. So we tend to stay UK recently. Bamborough last year, Knaresborough later this month for the 42nd anniversary and Staithes next month for my sister’s 75th. It means we can take the greyhound with us as well.
Our last foreign holiday was our honeymoon almost 35 years ago. We've holidayed in Scotland but predominantly on the south coast of England and over in the Northwest. Granted a lot of those holidays were dictated by cost and the fact that we didn't want to take young children onto aircraft, but, despite that I don't think that we've missed out. We've had some great times and the bairns enjoyed each and every holiday. Each to their own but I wouldn't swap our family holidays for two weeks in the sun in Spain or Greece etc.
Going to Germany on the 13th of this month to a little place just outside of Munich, love travelling around Germany and met some really nice people. Country itself is beautiful but I also think our country is the best for natural beauty. We tend to have a lot of weekends away up and down the country
We usually stay in the UK with Scotland our favourite venue, had 3 breaks there this year so far. We're going to Lake Garda by train in September, our first foreign visit other than Normandy for years. My missus is also bad on her feet and she's worrying about changing stations as we have to in Paris and Milan so having to leave big time gaps in between trains, were on the go from 6 am at St Pancras and don't get to our hotel until 11.30pm so a long day, we might as well have flown but not keen and thought the train would be an experience. Think sticking to the UK will do us in future.
Aye, love this country, just got back from Robin Hoods bay, off up the Northern Lakes in two weeks and then 3 separate weeks in Northumberland. Don’t think we will be going abroad again.
We have booked a caravan in Northumberland for a week in August to use as a base for exploring around the coast, sounds daft it only being an hour away, but there's so much to see it makes sense to stop up there rather than sit in the car every day. It's still a break from the house and routine, away from work and a chance to relax hopefully
When our kids were younger 10 & 8 we booked a caravan on a site up Wensleydale, one of the best holidays we had with the kids and only an hour from home, you don't have to travel round the world to have a great holiday if you've got youngsters.
We went to the cheese factory yesterday in hawes, walk around the town then over to ribble viaduct and then onto ingleton and settle. Lovely scenery and even with the slightly miserable weather it was still beautiful
Finances as they have been with us over the last decade we have had no choice. I haven't been abroad for about 15 years, the wife even longer and the kids never. We go camping now and again and that's it. Kids are 5 and 7 so we never go far. We booked disneyland but it got cancelled due to covid and the prices for it are ridiculous now. Our money now only gets us the park tickets and hotel. Previously we had meal passes, shows character breakfast and an extra adult for that price! All in all we haven't been able to afford re-booking but we have managed to get a bit together so are going to do it for next year. Then we probably won't be abroad again for a while!
We did when the kids were younger. West Coast of Scotland, Lake District, Cornwall. Some cracking times but as they got older it was more economical to go to Spain / Greece. Now it's just the two of us I want to explore new places and cultures
Good thread this.....enjoyed reading the comments. I haven't been abroad since 2014, and don't miss it at all....I just found it too much hassle. Our passports expired in 2015 and we didn't renew them.... My brother in law has an apartment in Benidorm, and one in Mercia, which we could have free use of....we've been to the Benidorm one quite a few times prior to 2014 and had some great times. It's just not our "thing" anymore. In 2015 we bought a static at Brighouse Bay, near Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway. Absolutely loved it up there...my "happy place"....just loved everything about it. Would go up at least twice a month, all year round, always went up Boxing Day till NYD, longest stay was for 4 weeks, though did come home for 1 night to buy a boat trailer!! Circumstances changed (with the site), and we sold it in 2021...pleased we did tbh....a new management company came in and they were turfing people off left right and centre. We decided to sell while there was still a value to it. We bought a motorhome in 2021 and haven't looked back. Things have recently changed with the Mrs health, so are currently restricted to 2 nights away, unless we arrange dialysis somewhere....but that's easier said than done. There's so much to see in our region..... Northumberland, Cumbria and Yorkshire have got so much to offer, then there is the Borders, West Coast of Scotland. Some beautiful places, all within a few hours drive.
