Interesting scenario but again that's all down to the programming of the AI - so being a bit of a simpleton on AI, my solution to that would be you just program the AI to make paperclips when it is asked to do so and not just to churn out endless amounts of paperclips at any cost. It'll still be more efficient at making paperclips but instead of destroying everything for the sake of making paperclips it'll just do it when asked, better.
