(16:20) St. James's Palace Stakes, Group-1, 1m,. Round Course. The Dark Angel colt, Mostabshir, is improving rapidly and, although thrown-in at the deep-end here, can still run a big race. Jim Crowley on board for the J & T Gosden stable. 8/1 (PP/Wm.Hill/Coral) best price at this early time of writing. E/W probably best option at these odds. Some fine racing tomorrow at Royal Ascot folks, so enjoy and back all the winners!
Ascot have had 9.6mm since midnight with more predicted this morning. Stand by for a possible going change! https://www.ascot.com/thegoing
Royal Ascot Weather: Just a repeat of the above (from the BBC Weather people Today This morning's rain and showers will clear north-eastwards, leaving drier and sunnier conditions through this afternoon. The odd shower may develop however under some isolated patches of cloud.
When I was looking at the Tuesday and Wednesday runners on Sunday and the early betting, I figured this is probably going to be the Royal Ascot where I have the fewest bets. I pretty much steer clear of the huge field handicaps unless one of my horses is running at a decent price. The two year old races are a shot in the dark with virtually no form lines to go on and the same handful of stables dominating the betting, so I generally do not bother with juveniles until the July meeting or later. In the Group races the market seems to be three or four at short prices and then name your price the rest. I may turn out to be thankful that I left the Queen Anne ante post market alone. I liked last year’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail (stepped up to 10 furlongs after) and thought about an each way at a double digit price; and now he is a single figure price. His stablemate, Lockinge winner Modern Games, was opening his domestic pattern account having done all his winning on his travels and is the obvious favourite; however, Moulton Paddocks is about as cold as Siberia right now, so I think that Inspiral, in receipt of the fillies’ allowance will win for Frankie. In the King’s Stand, the market is again dominated by just three contenders; and the Aussie raider Coolangatta comes here on the back of a win Down Under in February. The Aussies have won 25 per cent of the last 20 runnings, so around 7/2 is fair. Dramatised won the Temple and needs to find a lot more improvement if she is going to trouble Highfield Princess, who was beaten half a length under a penalty in the Duke Of York warming up for this but the yard has only had two winners in the last 30 days from 40 runners so I will watch at 2/1. With the rain easing the ground, my bet for today is now off the boards: 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean did me a favour that day but he is no good thing at 13/8, where his obvious biggest danger is Irish 2000 winner Paddington. I do not think that the form line between the two races using Royal Scotsman is valid as the third at HQ ran no sort of race at The Curragh and two that finished behind him at HQ ended up nearer to Aidan O’Brien’s charge. Frankie should win his last St James’s Palace but will there be a flying dismount if he has superglue on the saddle? I am sure that Ron will be glued to the Wolferton at 5:35, where Francesco Clemente may go off favourite in first time cheekpieces.
