I think Dean Hammond is worth mentioning despite only really playing for us for 3 seasons seeing as he captained us in a great period.
Can't believe that I forgot Beatts and nobody else has either. Kev Davies was on fire in his first spell for us even if we screwed Blackburn over!..
Reading this thread goes remind you of some of the great characters of old and what their opinions would have been of the insipid players curently in the squad. I first went to wath Saints around 74/75. The players I always loved from the 70s and 80s were the likes of Peter Osgood, Alan Ball, Mickey Channon, Phil Boyer . David Armstrong, Ivan Golac, Kevin Keegan, etc. I cannot see that any of them would have found the kind of performances put in by the Saints this season to have been acceptable.
Some of my fave players through the years: Le Tissier Benali Dodd Monkou Beattie Marsden Niemi Claus Killer Oakley Richards Crouch Bridge Belmadi Surman SKD SRL Lallana Morgan Fonte And all the usual suspects we signed or brought through when we got back to the Premier League. There are so many quality players we have seen over the years, some stayed for a decade or more, some a season.
The player I could tell was going to do great things from the first moment was Bale. As a gangly teenager he just looked a different class. Niemi was another who really stands out as we have had lots of good keepers but none I can remember being so complete and reliable. Eyal Berkovitch was pretty special. His performance in the 6-3!
