    The Athletic:

Southampton’s move to hire Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has been delayed due to a disagreement over the required compensation fee.

Swansea believe Southampton must pay a higher compensation fee because they made their first move for Martin when they were still a Premier League club.

Southampton, on the other hand, feel they should be able to trigger Martin’s Championship-level release clause now they have been relegated to the second tier.

    Extra detail:

Southampton are still expected to land Martin despite the disagreement between the two clubs, with the 37-year-old’s backroom staff also expected to swap south Wales for the south coast of England. Hiring Martin’s trusted assistants will require Southampton to pay a larger compensation fee.

Swansea goalkeeping coach Dean Thornton looks set to replace Andrew Sparkes, who departed Southampton at the weekend.

IMG_6595.jpeg Shouldn’t he be at home packing? Probably taking a chance to chill with his family before coming to us where it’s going to be a very busy summer.

Makes no sense to me to move quickly to bring the new manager in,…to then waste weeks squabbling over £750k.

Should we allow ourselves to be mugged off because £750k is considered peanuts in the modern game?

    Completely agree .

Surely Swansea are in the right here ?

Saints must have still been in the PL when negotiates began , even if it was mathematically impossible for us to stay up , ee were still at that time a PL club .

Given the money spent on transfers , managers and back room staff compensation , why on Earth are we arguing about £750,000.00 .

you watch , someone else will come in and take him .

Never sits well with me, pinching managers from other teams. Hate it when it happens to us. This is just a bit of karma. Pay the money and get on with it. Rather this than them beating us in the playoff final next May.

I think I would be more upset if we ‘just paid it’. We are talking 3/4 of a million pound. We could feed a lot of people for that. I don’t like large sums of money being treated as pocket change.

Also, in every practical sense we were employing him as a Championship club. If i get engaged while my divorce goes through, then marry once it does, I am not committing bigamy! I can see why both sides are arguing but honestly I cannot see why everyone is bashing Saints on this.

It's just negotiations same as always, never understand why some people believe everything the (mostly) hopeless journos tell us.
And as for it's only 3/4 of a million pounds ffs get a grip!

There is a reason Selles was with us until the end of the season. He was the manager whilst we were a premier league club. We now have no manager and are looking to find a manager to manage a Championship team.

Regardless when we looked at him, he is still employed by Swansea and we want to appoint him AS A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.

No morals, no ‘trying to be clever’. Why the heck should we pay £¾million because Swansea think so. Heck, what if we were playing in the champions league last year and thought about it then? Would we have to pay £2million?

It's pointless for Swansea to hold off Because we can approach and pay thr lesser amount when we are officially a Championship Club anyway.

That being said, I'm pretty sure it's already agreed, and we are just waiting to announce it.

How it suits us doesn’t matter though, legally we were a PL club when negotiations began. What we were planning for is irrelevant when it comes down to it I would have thought.

Well legality is down to wording. If the clause says: when joining vs when approached by makes a huge difference here. I would expect the intent of the clause was about the expected status of the club he went to - and therefore the spirit of the clause will be in our favour. If it was written so tightly as to focus on the moment of approach then we have no leg to stand on. Why you would write that specific clause I have no idea.

In normal circumstances I would totally agree, they would be outrageous comments. But as we know, football is not normal and we fans get sucked into this type of casual language from time to time. Quite often though, there is a reminder that behind the huge amounts of money that players and managers get there are the day to day staff that get no more than ordinary Joe down the road. And they are the ones that are sacrificed first when relegation arrives.
I've never looked at player's wages with outrage more that they are lucky to be playing at the right place at the right time. There have been far better players before the PL was formed that earnt peanuts by comparison (more casual language). But when you see clubs lay off their workforce in times like this, what is spent on the players brings it all into focus a bit more.

I don’t know anything about him. What his players think of him, what style he likes to play, nothing. Any idea why we want him?

Morally we should pay the 750k, but in business the letter of the law or contract is of highest importance (especially when in your favour!)

I don't think even morally we should (though maybe you have higher morals than me :) )

They put any the clause as it can annoy you if you are flying high and a higher league club comes in for you. The season is over, we are the same level and we have come in for him. Our manager was under contract until the end of the season, and we didn't sack him after, his contract ended. We are now a Championship club with no manager.

Maybe I see it as too black and white and maybe there is a grey area.

If anything now we are no longer a Premier League club, morally they should give us a discount as we will have lost £100m income overnight.

As has been mentioned before, I'm more concerned about pissing off a club who we may well want to do business with soon.
