Bringing in free players with lots of experience will be good to support the younger players. I imagine we are just getting the free signings done first and then will move on to some further targets with lower ages
Duffy would also be a perfect replacement for Hanley while he is out at least. Probably a better passer and carries a greater aerial threat from set pieces as a bonus
Agree with that, but Wagner is also looking for character to fight back if we go behind. Barnes and Duffy both have plenty of that and that should also help our younger players.
New name. Gabe Forsythe, 16 year old Hamilton player heading our way if compensation can be agreed. Position not mentioned in any report I have seen.
Certainly a midfielder and probably a winger as he wears the number 7. Has appeared as sub twice for the first team, but still likely to be one for the future if he comes.
Left footed attacking midfielder/ centre midfielder according to the below. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gabe-forsyth/profil/spieler/948932
31 really isn't that old for a CB, it's not like Duffy couldn't play a part for 2-3 seasons, as a Championship starter or Premier League bench player. He ticks a lot of boxes in terms of being good on the ball and adding aerial threat, and his experience of Graham Potter's football is probably helpful. There's definitely worse free agent signings.
I agree. I also wonder whether it also reflects that Webber is now in the 7th year of his 7 year project. The final 11 games last season showed the weakness of a young squad when 3 senior players are out injured. We will still add young players for the future like Forsythe, but the emphasis now is on hitting the ground running with players ready to go on the first day of pre-season and the two free agent signings are exactly that.
Will Sargent, Barnes and Idah be enough as strikers? For me, Idah needs to go out on loan and another striker brought in. Are there any names being touted? Anybody out of contract players that would do a decent job for say for 2/3 seasons?
I think it depends on how we intend to line up, and the rest of our recruitment. In a 4-2-3-1, we could line up: Gunn Aarons Omobamidele Gibson McCallum McLean Sara Sargent Barnes Hernandez Idah Or the front 6 could be: McLean Sara Nunez Gibbs Hernandez Sargent I'd hope neither are how we intend to play, but if we have the first scenario in mind then clearly 3 strikers isn't enough, I'd be more comfortable with it in the second scenario where all three are competing for one spot. In terms of available players, Oli McBurnie is out of contract at Sheffield United and scored 13 goals this season, Britt Assombalonga is available, Ross Stewart scored 10 in 13 games for Sunderland then got injured, and is out of contract too. I suspect all of those will be too expensive for a depth striker, but if the future of Barnes is at CAM and Sargent out wide, they could make sense.
Tottenham, Newcastle and Arsenal are among the Premier League clubs interested in Leicester's James Maddison and the 26-year-old England midfielder could go for around £40m. (Mirror)
£40m !?! Not nearly enough! It should be £60m minimum. Tell those cheap barstewards to come back when they're serious. Maybe we can loan SW to Leicester to do the negotiations.
Crazy how a £40m sale could add £3m to our transfer budget this summer, that would easily pay for a signing.
Most transfer fees are paid in installments over 2 or 3 years. I assume we will only get 15% of those installments and not the full amount upfront.
That is true, but equally our purchase of a new player would also be in installments, so it would still add £3m to the budget - just we would have to insist on a matching schedule of payments
