Hmmm....I understand your fear, and I do worry that Selles will be able to sell the whole "given a full pre-season, I will be able to implement my philosophy, which I couldn't at the point of taking over" line. But in some ways, I'd almost rather that than a Hughton style appointment, which is all a little bit jobs for the average boys/Big Sam. If we are going to change manager (and I hope we do), there's no reason why we shouldn't go down a Carrick/Vieira route of a young, up and coming, bright guy (though I'm also sure that Selles considers himself such as well, it just remains to be seen if SR/Wilcox do), rather than tried-and-tested 'useful in the Championship, but you'll get rid of them the minute you get promoted' types. Ankersen for all his myriad faults doesn't strike me as a short-term fix type.
If Selles gets the job that's SR finished. ST renewals will be non existent and we'll just continue our problems in the Champ. He really really has to be binned before/at the end of the season
Clearly Selles isn’t the answer. I can’t believe it but he actually managed to make us worse than Jones. We need someone that can gain the players respect and play some attacking football. If SR continue to spend money then we are a good project and should be able to attract a decent calibre of players and managers. But we need a manager with a clear philosophy and way of playing. Also need players that want to be here and are up for the challenge instead of the absolute pricks that we have now.
No, I'm implying that as far as managers go, they have found cheap solutions in Jones and Selles. I don't deny SR have wasted a lot money, I think that is evident.
Jones wasn't cheap - the compo paid to Luton on top his wages was quite a lot of money. And that's without the pay off to Jones after we sacked him.
What did Selles say after the game last night? Something about the club being due to release an agenda for next season. Presumably he means a plan and the word 'agenda' was just the language barrier, but it sounds like the club (rightly) have been preparing for life after the Premier League, and we'll here more about what's in store for the future soon. The only worrying thing with that is that Selles knows of these plans, so is he in them?
Jones was on £1.3m a year, that's pretty cheap wages for PL standard. The Luton compo and Jones payoff only seems expensive because his tenure was so short and he was an utter failure at PL level. I agree that Jones should never have been appointed in the first place and that was an expensive, but avoidable mistake.
I honestly don't think they appointed Jones and/or Selles because they were cheap. It was Ankersen trying to be clever and thinking he'd uncovered a diamond, rather than a turd.
I agree with you about Ankersens trying to be clever and perhaps Ankersen was being clever in his wage negotiations but in the end you get what you pay for and in Jones we got just that. Selles simply got the job because Marsch turned it down. My point wasn’t about SR spending and wasting money on transfers, that was taken the wrong way, I was replying to SFC about Selles being manager. My point is the level of manager SR is willing to pay for fighting relegation or promotion. So far they have appointed 2 inexperience managers at PL level with wages to match. If SR appoints Selles to be permanent manager next season are they going to give him an improved but expensive contract? I hope SR sack Selles and appoint a manager that has knowledge and experience in winning titles and promotion but that kind of manager will cost money and a lot more in wages than what they paid Jones or Selles. We will know shortly if SR maintain the status quo with Selles.
We don't know that, but he would realise that is going to happen for sure and I think we need to prepare for it to be pretty brutal and wide ranging.
The only similar experience I have had in the few office jobs I did is the same thing had been said/done and more than a few people who thought they were part of the plan 'moving forward' soon found out they weren't - but the 'plan' wasn't a secret, it's just no one said 'You'll be sacked next month'. No, I wasn't one of them on any occasion which probably says more about the companies than me.
I don't think money will be a major issue for next season (if we don't get promoted straight away it might) as I would expect to be bringing in somewhere between £100-150m in transfers which will buy us a few strategic good quality experienced Championship players to boost the spine of the team especially a striker, central midfield and CB or two Outs JWP & Lavia £40-50m each, KWP £20-30m, Tella £15-20m, Salisu £15-20m, ABK £10-15m, Che £10-15m plus bits for Orsic, Djenepo, Adarma Out of contract Theo, Ely and Big Willy will save £7m on the wage bill too
JWP probably wont leave, Burnley will probably be looking to get Tella on the cheap so they might try for about £5m ? Cant see too much of a queue for ABK, so possibly another £5m or thereabouts ?
I would offer Walcott a 1 year deal (obv not at premier league prices). He loves the club, he is > Championship quality and brings experience. His next move after his contract expires (providing he doesn't retire) is a Championship club anyway, so may was well be us.
