Me neither as it happens. Grew up with them, omnipresent, ubiquitous and they were in the right place at the right time. Produced some memorable songs and I concede, helped develop popular music forward from 65-67. But their status is, in my opinion, overrated. Good songwriters, but as musicians they were at best bang average (and I'm not even including Ringo in that!) However, I know I'm likely in a minority of such opinion....
Not entering into a bunfight over the Stones and Beatles as I've been in too many over the years but go back to both bands back catalogues and it is full of some exceptional music as well as complete and utter dross , exile on main street , sticky fingers, let it bleed , rubber soul, revolver ( yellow submarine can get in the bin ) abbey Rd have to be some of the finest albums ever recorded imho
The Beatles are the outcome of an exceptional intersection of several things : - Very good song-writers - A band open to new sounds and directions - A music producer (George Martin) who was not only classically trained in music, but a;so interested in "pushing the envelope" with production/studio tech
I like the early stuff of both The Beatles and The Stones. The former were very Buddy Holly influenced, the latter Chuck Berry - which gives The Stones the edge for me. Don’t care much for the more experimental stuff of either, although The Stones shade it again. The early Beatles singles are all classic pop songs, which stand the test of time. In fact, all the Beatles singles are great. Still sound fresh today, especially when compared to the tedious, dreary ballads and tuneless dance music of today. Both are a massive influence on any decent music which has followed since their ‘60s heyday - to some greater or lesser degree.
The Beatles influence on some of my favourite artists has never been in dispute and its likely that this influence will continue
With The Beatles, that's the stuff that I like best...along with George Harrison's compositions. The Stones make me want to drink, take **** loads of drugs and dance. It's just stuff that calls to me. There are only 2 kinds of music, the stuff that moves you...and stuff that doesn't.
And perhaps even more importantly without the Rutles we wouldn't have these mad covers by Galaxie 500 and my own personal favourite, the genius that was Bongwater, on the Rutles Highway Revisited tribute LP on Shimmy Disc from 1990!
Tbh I'm quite surprised you didn't pop Start! up there instead of But I'm Different Now as that's literally just Taxman with a different title, right down to the guitar solo! Or failing that an actual Beatles cover, although I do accept that it wasn't released at the time!
With properly "on the case" lawyers at Parlophone, you definitely would not have got much of this (oh what WUM fodder it gave some of us kids) ...
I once saw a claim that Noel Gallagher said that if Oasis had not happened, he probably would have been in a Beatles tribute band. To which some witty dog allegedly replied : you already are in one.
Other than the fact the George Harrison loved it, he was asked many times about it and said he thought that it was a compliment.
Lucky for them they were not on the radar of John Lennon, who hostility to what he deemed unoriginal artists is public record (and many imes more so for Oasis - he would have publicly eviscerated them) .
