Not for any specific events like a coronation. Who travelled to France to see Emmanuel Macron elected? Probably no one.

Though I'm hoping to get Olympic tickets

Harry wanted the privilege without any responsibility to the Firm, he misjudged the room on that one.

People go to religious shrines because of religion, generally. People go to Buck Palace for selfies.

    People will come because
    A: people travel
B: people like history and big houses to look at

If things are so bad in Britain why have we not got boatloads of people seeking a better life elswewhere? Just a trickle of non dom tax dodgers looking for new homes in the sun!

The platform is there for anyone already, plus the monarch isn't supposed to get involved with politics already, so I can't imagine that would change when it's King Antndec - I can't see Nige beating them to the job anyway :emoticon-0100-smile

You might have noticed that there's 27 countries people can no longer escape to very easily since Brexit.

I avoided the TV coverage but caught a glimpse of the ceremony on the news......hilarious!

I appreciate it would be a source of amusement to anyone unaware of what was actually going on, but if it cheered you up, that is a result.

I don’t think you need to call someone ignorant because they think royal ceremony is ridiculous.
Nobody is calling you ignorant because you don’t agree that it’s morally unacceptable and a waste of money.

Ignorant was probably too strong, I have amended it to unaware. Some of the Ceremony was bewildering, the BBC did their best to explain it, but it ranks highly on the weirdometer scale.

If Charlie had paraded down The Mall on a dragon, I'd definitely have pledged allegiance. Or failing that a unicorn - accompanied by a lion on a leash. Poor show really, when you think of the wasted opportunities.

You should be in charge of the entertainment at St Marys, it's pretty naff at the moment and needs new ideas.

As usual, the monarchy is a complicated issue. There are so many pros & so many cons.

Ultimately I believe in meritocracy. I hate the idea of a family birthright that puts people on a pedestal

However the reason I have softened massively on monarchism, and I am now more accepting of the royal family is because I have realised that there will always be power & wealth disparity. No matter what system humans choose there will be inequality; and they are doing what they can to right the wrongs of the past and be accountable to the general public.

The only thing I can say with absolute certainty after reading this thread:

A lot of people MASSIVLEY undervalue tradition and legacy. Without the monarchy (and indeed religion) we would not have such a safe, diverse and amazing country to raise our families.

It’s counterintuitive to say that an unelected institution has given us a lot of freedom. But I think it’s at least partially true.

The American republic experiment has been going well for a couple of hundred years now. But it seems to be hitting a real stumbling block in terms of corruption and societal decline. The British monarchy (tempered by democracy and republicanism) has undoubtedly stood the test of time and led to a fantastic nation for us all.

The big question is are we looking at age or generational effects when it comes to perceptions of the monarchy. Only time will tell!

I am not disappointed, it's the kind of reasoned response that I have come to expect from a not606er. Respect.

The demise of QE2 has left a major problem for Charles to follow, many didn't want a Monarchy, but they respected the Queen.
