I was discussing this yesterday and we had the exact same opinion. Multiple home ownership is a crime in a society like ours. There is no incentive to make the rental market affordable. Wealth rising up enables a few to own the majority or properties- and this is happening globally. Canadians, Brits, Australians all with the same issues - so anybody who blames our small nation is very wrong. It is greed.

Yeah, it has become a massive knock-on problem where I am. The Maritimes -- the bits of Canada that jut out into the Atlantic -- have historically been poor, and consequently property was fairly cheap. But because corporate/speculative purchases caused the property market in major cities elsewhere in the country to spike, and because it's scenic here, people started selling their homes in Toronto/Vancouver and moving en masse to the region (particularly once COVID demonstrated that an awful lot of jobs can be done remotely). Rent has skyrocketed, homes have doubled in value in a decade and there are now people who are making good money that are living out of their cars because even with 250% increases in rent, the vacancy rate is still basically nil. My coworker makes, inflation-adjusted, about 70% more than I did at the same age...I shared a two bedroom flat in the city (and for a while, paid the totality because my roommate was on the run from the law), and she and her partner currently live in a yurt on her mother's property, because they can't even afford a one bedroom in a small town.

While I was travelling I met several Canadians who were in Thailand to save money. It was cheaper to fly to Thailand and live there for remote work than to share a house with 5 or 6 people in Canada.

My mother grew up in a shoebox of a house on no land in an unfashionable exurb of Vancouver. They were on public assistance for a number of years after a death in the family.

I looked it up a few years ago...the house is still standing, and in 2018ish sold for the equivalent of about £850,000. Guaranteed it's worth more than £1m now. Probably significantly more.

You could be poor and own that house, once. Today you need to be quite wealthy.

His text messages, produced in the Dominion defamation case, appear to contain some really fun stuff that'll hopefully leak at some point.

Like him or Hate him, I fully agree with him here.

He’s right about the fact there are no debates allowed around the true issues. This applies to all Western nations not just the US

I don’t disagree with this either, though I would say debating sensitive topics is tricky rather than banned.

There are lots of topics which we need to open up which have become closed. The caveat is that many have been shut mainly due to the vitriol of the people who have attempted to debate them.

Topics which have been closed down for me:

Yes, immigration is good for nations but why is it not okay for the working class and under-skilled to point out it hits them first.

Trans rights are a huge bundle of difficulties. It is hard to talk about the relationship between autism and trans identification. It is also hard to separate logic and emotion in the debate around trans women in sport.

It is hard to talk about cultural ignorance. There are cultures within the UK who uphold abhorrent traditions in the name of culture. It should be ok to worry about the growth of these communities. Always be intolerant of intolerance even in a tolerant society.

Americanisation of our shock and outrage. The N word, BLM, hating ‘cops’ are coming out of a totally different background to ours. We can’t seem to discuss them as they pertain to us without false equivalency being made.

    Etc Etc

However, it is a tool of certain groups to say that since a few loud extremists on the internet shut all this down, then anyone leftwing is ‘woke’ and dangerous. That is just the same attempt to shut down debate as the ones they are complaining about.

    Although …

… The working class and under class need to recognise that anti-immigration Tories are their enemies, not their friends and Labour need to be clearer in getting their message across that they are their friends, not their enemies

According to that "towering mountain of wonderful.intellect and hindsight" it is the Labour party for not supporting the Government's actions on dealing with "boat" people!!! It is oñe of the Government's top.priorities. Not education, not the quality of the NHS, not civil.liberties, not securing a better deal wiith the EU over trade, certainly not the economy ... but defendíng the UK's borders against these "dangerous" people. .... No wonder Rory Stewart left the Tory party!!

So we are being urged to swear allegiance to the king and heirs - why would anyone swear allegiance to someone who hasn`t been democratically appointed, or earned the right to fill the role?. And his heirs too??

I would like to express my desire to abolish the monarchy once and for all and swear allegiance to the ideals of peace, love, and humanity.

Aberdeen, whilst completely understanding your viewpoint, we're Saints fans, so we're used to swearing....allegiance to undemocratically elected appointees

“After much consideration I have decided to come out and finally feel comfortable announcing my true authentic self. It is with great relief that I announce to everyone that I identify as a woman and not just any woman but as a woman of color as well. I guess this would make me gay/lesbian as well , since I am attracted to women,” Webb, who is married to a biological white woman named Brandy, announced on April 12.
