Good luck on the new appointment and let's hope that it is the start of an upward curve for PFC. He needs to create unity, team spirit and engender self belief right from the off just like Adkins and Crosby did for us. Potential may be realised with such things in place. Adds a little more spice to a certain match on 17th Dec.
No, it isn't an opinion. If I said "Adkins is the best manager in the Championship" it would be. "Adkins was signed because he is good, not because he is cheap" is not.
Many at POSH thought Darren Ferguson was an appointment on the cheap with no management experience. Three promotions in four seasons is not bad for an unknown and there is no reason why Appleton cannot be a success given time and the backing of fans
I think Appleton will be good for you lot. I've rated him for a while, he's well spoken, experienced but a good young manager, he deserves his chance. Those saying "who?", particularly Saints fans, remember when everyone went "Who? Cheap and Cheerful." when we appointed Adkins, look at us now. All the best (apart from when you play us) and ignore the idiots who cannot see the wood for the trees.
Yes, I am sure you will get behind him and fill Fratt........, that you will get behind him and anyway, he was surely not the cheapest option? There's any number of you on here who would have done it for nothing! Good luck, and at least it will stop all the "guess who I saw in the carpark" nonsense!
As Harry Potter (sort of) said: "Every great manager started off as nothing more than he is now: a newbie"
I think this is a good appointment for Portsmouth. I find it irritating to see the same list of managers just get rehashed around for these jobs. Appleton seems like a sound and thoughtful appointment rather than a name appointment; if Pompey really wanted a cheap manager, I am sure there is a coach at Fratton Park who would have been happy to take them to League 1. Looking forward to seeing how Mapples does.
You'll know exactly WHO he is on the 18th Quackers. OK, bit of a left field appointment by Pompey but just maybe one of the shrewdest moves made by the club in a long while. We know we have a good 'back room' in Whits and Gray and this guy comes with the blessings of many a top figure in the game, so let's all get behind him and start reeling in the deckchairs now summer is over.
http://www.youtube.com/user/officialpfc There's a press confrence with Appleton and Lampitt on there for all to seeee.
I have a feeling this man is going to do a good job at Portsmouth & repeat my comments of last year on this site: We have a fierce rivalry & long may that continue; however I have a personal wish to see ALL south coast clubs doing well - its good for all of us in this part of the football world. I very much include Bournemouth, Aldershot, - the whole lot! I think we should all keep a sense of proportion is this rivalry - the violent element does not enhance the reputation of any of us & I think we would want to be seen as civilised people. Anybody want to argue with that?
Sad and sour as usual LDH - you should try and get out more, mix with people, and attempt to make a few friends.............
Good interview and said all the right things if your a Pompey fan But the only thing i would worry about was the part where he said "i would like to get the team playing where it did 5 or 6 years ago" Surley you want to move out of Falling Down Park or maybe training in Gods part of Hampshire is the closest you will ever get to a real stadium like St Marys.
I really think you got the gist of what I was saying - Aldershot is a Hampshire club that literally came back from the dead although it took 16 long years. A great advert for all those connected with the club
Yeah I know, I was just being you know.... pedantic, and of course, I want any Hampshire club to do well. Farnborough were the same, although they didn't have as far to come. In fact, I think Farnborough's infrastructure's now much better than when they went bust! (Although I don't mean that it was a good thing they went bust)
I loved the Dell colin but it did start to change when seats had to be added, although obviously you were still close to the pitch but it began to lose part of the atmosphere when the capacity went down to 15,000 ish and of course like all fans who are brought up on certain things changing ground is a little hard to accept BUT St Marys is excellent and if or when you do move to a new ground you know what i mean.
StP - there is a good arguement for both types of ground/stadium. Of course larger capacity and better facilities provide more revenue, but becomes less personnel and less intimidating for other teams and their supporters. This is ok if you are into football being a family entertainment commercial business, but "smaller" teams lose their edge as the players of Man U, City, Chelski, Arse etc. are used to playing in luxurious surrondings. The way that QPR are playing at home this season against the "bigger" teams goes to show that smaller, compact, intimidating grounds make a more level playing field. I hope the same is true on the 18th when your team arrive at our ****hole and get the crap scared out of them as I believe that without that it would be very difficult for us to get a result.
To be fair, I don't think it's a case of either "Old, rubbish facilities and good atmosphere" or "New, shiny facilities and a rubbish atmosphere" as people often suggest. You can get plenty of decent new stadiums with a good atmosphere I'm sure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_One#Football_League_One_stadiums_2010.E2.80.9311 This is a list of the grounds we played at last season. There are some real dumps in there. Fratton Park is better than most of them.
