The British consulate were at the scene of Madeline McCann's "disappearance" before the Portuguese police. Dr John Reid was Home Secretary at the time. Maddie's Dad had a stint as Celtic doctor but left that position and a very good job at Glasgow Royal infirmary to move down to Sticksville Surrey. This move took place a few weeks after the arrest of James Torbett for historic sexual abuse of kids at Celtic boys club. Three other Celtic Boys club hierarchy were also questioned and cautioned at the time but charges were dropped. Only Torbett, at that time, stood trial. He was found guilty of multiple charges but was given an incredibly light sentence. He was out of jail within 2 years.
When he next came to the notice of the law it was through a BBC expose that was aired on the 6 o'clock news in Britain. Torbett at the time was living and working in the USA even though anybody applying for a green card in the US would find it impossible to gain one if they had a sex crime conviction on their record. Within 48 hours of that report being aired US marshalls had arrested Torbet, put him on a flight and he was back in the UK totally negating US deportation procedures.
Dr John Reid was made Celtic chairman on his retirement from politics. It was said at the time he was given the job because he had always been a friend to Celtic.
