Don't get me wrong. I understand the need for clubs to do whatever they can to gain more revenue. Should the SOL be renamed I personally wouldn't have a problem with it as the clubs income would increase substantially. Wouldn't it? This is where in my opinion Ashley has played a bloody blinder. Derek Llambias; "Naming the stadium the Sports Direct Arena helps up to showcase the opportunity to interested parties. We are now actively seeking a long-term sponsor wishing to acquire full naming rights for the stadium." So Ashley has destroyed over 100 years of history for what? To "showcase" an opportunity??? Ha'way man, pull the other one. Surly potential sponsors can see any opportunity without Ashley making SJP look like his biggest, tackiest shop front. I wouldn't mind betting that NUFC will gain naff all financially until the name Sports Direct Arena is confined to the same scrapheap as SJP. Funny as ****.
I think most clubs will go down this route once the financial fair play rules kick in. I'm not sure why they are so bothered.
As long its official title remains the Sports Direct Arena he has definitely mugged us. If it changes he'll have still mugged us because the money will go straight into his pocket.
I can see why they are bothered. It's Ashley's company, NUFC will gain nowt until the name changes yet again. Why couldn't they just leave it till a suitable company came along? I don't buy this showcasing ****.
Guaranteed every club will follow suit after the fair play rules kick in. Sports Direct is tacky at every level but I think that's obviously only short term, I would be worried that the biggest bidder was a brand that is pathetic, like Netto. Most of them are finance, insurance, airlines, so I can't see anyone having to suffer the Always Ultra Stadium but if they do I hope it's the Bindippers. I wouldn't throw too much dirt at your neighbours though because this could come back and bite you if you end up going the same way.
I don't doubt most clubs will head the same way and TBH honest I don't care as long as the club gains from it Up the road however Ashley has effectively turned NUFC into one giant free advert for Sports direct. The name is plastered everywhere you look.
you seem to forget if they manage to get the £10 mil they want for the naming they will have £45 mil inluding the andy carrol money to spend in the jan transfer window the lucky bastards!
Don't you mean bastard as who seriously believes MA will part with it! Not a good sign for any genuine Newcastle fans.
Agree mate, it's terrible. The bright spot on the horizon is we'll be there long after the club raping twastard has gone.
Thats what they do & he's got the balls to do it. These big business types have a way of hanging around longer than you might think. They know how to use the tax angle to get even bigger. KTF mate.
We at SAFC were moved from our cherished and beloved Roker Park to the magnificent SOL - but not without some serious debate - to go or not go. Then came the naming of our new sparkling ediface - new debate over the name - now we are all happy/reconciled with S.O.L. Other clubs relocated and went down the sponsored name route from day 1 at their NEW stadium. I really believe that SAFC will sometime soon find a sponsor for the SoL which will create some debate but not earth-shattering. The difference between these scenarios is the NEW factor - if you are changing from the historic but outdated stadia of the past - the sponsoring is not too much of a jolt to fans. At SportDirect they cannot see that the home of NUFC is sacred to the fans. Sell the old stadium, build new complete with a new sponsored name ----- oh sorry they don't own it to sell Never mind just trample all over the fans their loyalty will keep them coming back. The history, the passion, the memories of lifetimes - both good and bad - count for nowt. I actually feel sorry for the fans - until I read some the crap the post on our site. They relaly have some t**ts in charge up there at the councilhouse stadium. KTF
This entirely...SJP has been the home to Newcastle United since day 1, making it even older than our famous black and white shirts. £10m is a lot of money, but history is history. It's just another one of those things we as fans will have to swallow in order to support our club...****, but true!
I don't see why they have to lose the St James Park bit entirely. Sportdirect.com@St James Park Stadium was a bit of a twatty name, but it got the sponsoring name in and let everyone keep calling it St James's. Not ideal, but better IMO.
It was precisely BECAUSE everyone called it St James' that they had to change it completely, no-one, not even MOTD called it SD@SJP unless it was with a childish grin on their face!
