Off Topic Cataracts. Anyone had them?

Hey. I’ve just found out that I am likely to need cataracts sorted in ky eyes. (At 47!) anyone been through it? Is it easy enough? I’ve had some pretty awful eye things over the years (laser treatment vitrectomies and injections in both eyes). I’ve heard cataracts are pretty easy and wasy recovery

 

That's young, but my brother had them in his thirties!
Sorted no bother though. They do one eye, let it settle and then the other.
I've been told I have them too, but tiny and not worth dealing with yet they say.
I look at it as something with a straightforward cure now, that fifty years ago would have just meant a slow deterioration in sight.

I had both eyes done just before I retired, almost 20/20 vision and just need reading glasses now. Driving at night is a lot safer, oncoming headlights used to look as if they were 6 feet wide! I had about a 3 week gap between each eye operation and its a bit strange having one good eye and one dodgy one, made driving a bit tricky.

 

My mam had both of her eyes done when she was 80 with no problems.

I'm getting one done on Wednesday at SpaMedica in Gateshead.
I must admit I wasn't keen on the idea of having someone poking in my eyes with just a local anaesthetic, but I've spoken to quite a few folks who have had the same op and they unanimously agree it's absolutely painless and even better than visiting the dentist.
I'll update on Thursday!

Good luck mate. I don't suffer,but I took my Dad some years ago to get his sorted out. My advice is,you'll need some patience.....it takes a while in there!

 

Had both mine done. Was terrified for the first one but you see nothing and feel nothing. Take your glasses so they have an idea of what lens to give you

 

Yep had right eye done last year at Sunderland Eye infirmary. Painless, 10 minutes in chair

I’ve had injections into both eyes when wide awake. I’m terrified of that. Not really worried about the cataracts if that’s what it is. Can’t be as bad as that!

 

I found out I had them last year at 60 years old . I’ve worn glasses since I was 7 years old but after the operation on both eyes I can see nearly perfectly and only need glasses to read . It is the best thing to happen to me , it still seems strange on a morning getting up and not putting a pair of glasses on
The operation isn’t bad just a bit strange , there is no pain . They puts some drops in your eyes which numbs them and after about 20 mins you go to theatre and they give you an injection in the eye (you. Don’t really notice it ) . They start the operation and 15-20 mins later your done and can go home after about 30 mins . You go home with a patch on which is worn overnight and can be removed the next day , and you can see again. You have to wear a protective patch on a night for a week and put drops in your eye while it’s fully healing . You can drive the next day usually so straight away you will see the difference .
I had 2 done and on the second one I nearly fell asleep during the operation it ifs that easy so don’t worry , just look to the future .

 

Just back from SpaMedica and it was a much better experience than I expected.
Painless and over in about 6 minutes.
A visit to the dentist is a lot worse.

 

Had one eye done a few years back when I was in my late 40s. They put me out for it so don’t remember a thing. Lot more common to put you under when you are younger apparently.

 

My dad had his eyes done his first eye they could not fit a lens at first so he had to wait about 6 weeks then put it in, his other eye no bother he had the sedation first, he was 88 for his 2nd lens, he had have to have antibiotic eye drops put in afterwards for about a month but he coped alright. this was at the Sunderland eye infirmary.

 

Well the specialist just confirmed I have cataracts in both eyes. Now on the waiting list.

Waiting list is on average about 8 months on the NHS, depending on which NHS trust and how urgent it's needed. However the waiting times are coming down, so it may be quicker. I only know because a woman at work needs a cataract operation.
