and another just 2 years earlier, 5 points difference between the bottom 8 sides, 7 points between the bottom 9.

Boro and WBA were relegated. Blackburn stayed up finishing in 15th position on 41 points. Newcastle picked up 7 points from their remaining 13 games and were relegated, finishing in 18th place on 34 points, one point behind Hull

So it would seem, thanks Aski. Maybe it seems odd to us because we've only been involved the last couple of seasons.

Like you I would have said the same, until Milky gave me a challenge to look at the actual data ;)

I'd say 5 times in the last 13 years, the table have been similar to how the present one looks now. Before 2009 most of the seasons were similar to how you expected, one side adrift, with 4 or 5 other teams battling to avoid the other two relegation places.

The only one that is anywhere close (from what I can see) before 2009, is the 93/94 season when Chelsea in 16th place, were 7 points clear of Swindon in 22nd (premier league had 22 teams in it then). We were in 5th place at the same that season, having already surpassed the mythical 40 points target, with 43 points from 26 games (how we all wish that was true for this season) :) Man City were in the relegation places at the time, but finished in 16th place, with 3 points more than Sheff Utd, who were relegated. How times have changed

Fine work Aski. Guess it’s a reflection of the two leagues within a league syndrome.
Basically, without any standout terrible sides… the bottom half of the Prem is a often a bunfight.

Yup, you have those few teams that will always be up there as their financial position puts them way ahead of everyone else, 3 or 4 other clubs that have established themselves sufficiently that most seasons will see them finish towards the bottom end of the top half of the table, and then the rest of the clubs .

All it takes is that little bit of quality from one player, be half decently organised, and to have the rub of the green when it comes to luck to breed confidence to ensure that those teams that are most likely to finish in the bottom half of the league, avoid the relegation places.

It's a simplistic view, but I would say that most of us could easily predict 8 out of 10 teams who will finish in the bottom half of the table, and at least one team who will get relegated based upon the above , but getting those exact positions correct would be more like a lottery

So all the teams are as good as each other or all equally **** depending on whether you sit on the glass half full or half empty side of the fence.

But my viewpoint might differ depending on which of the posts I reply to, hence the request for clarification ;)

Aski great stuff mate but out of curiosity and hope, how many times have clubs struggled at the bottom for a couple of years and gone on to be fully established for a few seasons? This is my big hope.

Aski I’m only trying to take your mind off the pain mate. I’m doing this for you <laugh>

Cheers Doc, you are all heart :)

The obvious one that springs to mind, especially given their present situation is Everton

Between 1997 and 2002 they never finished higher than 13 and their lowest position was 17. For those 6 years their average position was 15.They followed this with a 7th, 15th and 4th. In 2006 they finished 11th.

For the next 8 years they averaged 6th position, the lowest being 8th and finished 5th on 3 occasions. Despite the perceptions of how poorly they have done in recent years, in the last 8 years, they have had 4 top 10 finishes, 2 11th place finishes, a 12th place finish, with last season being the worst, when they finished 16th. They, together with Leicester would be my idea of an established top 10 premier league team, albeit both clubs are having very poor seasons at present

Bolton relegated in 1998, promoted in 2001. First season back in the Premier League (2001/2002 season) they finished 16th, following season they finished 17th. Next 4 years they finished 8th, 6th, 8th and 7th, before it all went wrong, spending 5 seasons with bottom half finishes ending in relegation

Stoke promoted in 2008, first 5 seasons they finished anywhere between 11th and 14th, followed by 3 successive 9th place finishes before it all went wrong.

West Ham seem to have a couple of average seasons, followed by a couple of good seasons, then it all seems to fall apart.

Leicester prior to this season, have spent 8 seasons in the Premier League since being promoted in 2014, and have never finished lower than 14th and had 6 top 10 finishes. Even Southampton managed 4 consecutive top 10 finishes between 2014 and 2017.
