Two banks not learnt the lessons from 2008 and got involved in risky dealings. Why have HSBC bought one of them for a $1??

An unelected government that has a cavalier disregard for domestic and international law. What could possibly go wrong? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

There is, because it affects all of us in the pocket. If, as may be the case the Fed feel they cant lever interest rates to bring down inflation then costs rise. If that spreads to the other parts of the world, which often follow the US, the worse it gets. We arent immune to bankers getting it wrong I am afraid.

That is about buying the UK arm of one of the failed banks. The govt facilitated that and it saved loads of companies in this country. It looks a very good deal for our economy and funded by HSBC not buy the taxpayer.

The govt bailed out banks with loans to the tune of £130bn during 07 and 08. Sure we all remember the northern rock queues where people wanted their cash as the first real sign of people acting. My understanding, might be wrong, is that around £100bn of that bailout has been paid back since. RBS failed and that saw around £30bn not paid back to the govt.

Good that the public purse has had that back , but it’s been repaid by the banks’ profits since. I still don’t understand where the original losses went

I am just a happy amateur when it comes to the economy mate, so I may not be the best to explain, and may not have it all wrong. I understand the crash being down to banks essentially giving out loads of loans upto 2007. A lot on mortgages and people seemed able to get big loan amounts. Obviously the bank needs to earn the interest on these loans to stop itself going bust. Some of these loans proved unaffordable so people stopped paying and suddenly banks didnt have enough money coming in. Govt had to step in with loans while they got the system stabilised. Once operating sensibly again they pay back, unless they fail to recover like RBS then the govt (us) loses. Loans werent just mortgages either, credit cards etc. I have no doubt there is more to it than this noddy explanation, but that I think is the essence.

I’m an amateur too . My understanding was the banks were drawn into USA by offer of loads of business for lending to the “sub prime “ mortgage market ( clue was in the title) . So they loaned to USA system who then couldn’t get the mortgages repaid and so told uk we can’t in turn give back to you .
If that’s the case , did USA banks just give up trying to get repayments and so loads of Americans ended up with free houses , or if they repossessed, did the banks end up owning loads of “ real estate” . Either way , with our money

I was getting all nostalgic listening to the radio earlier.

Someone was getting a bit emotional talking about the olden days when you could get an appointment to see a doctor, go to A&E and be seen, book a dental appointment and expect an operation within your lifetime .

Anyone on here old enough to remember those days <laugh>

I even remember the days when a doctor would come to your house if you were really poorly. Or maybe it is all a dream.

Or going into the tax office and asking to speak to somebody, and seeing them in about 15 mins. The Council having offices where you could do the same. Now it's waiting sometimes hours on a phone (if you don't give up) then being told "you are shouting I am going to end the call (after previously saying they couldn't hear you). A suspicious person would think that they do not actually want to converse with you. But not me, no siree :emoticon-0102-bigsm

You didn’t have to be really poorly, my mam would ring up and say I had a bad stomach and Dr Keeden would be there within half an hour with his little round black bag.

Speaking of Scottish politics, I've snagged an invite to a do at Edinburgh Castle on Thursday night, and both Nigela and the leadership candidates will probably be there.

I might be a little bit naughty.

Apologies in advance @Smug in Boots

We are so lucky down here as we have same day appointments over two shifts. From 8am, and 1pm system, just ring in at 8am press the appropriate number and they call back. Explain you problem get a time and turn up. This will be to see a doctor or a nurse if a lesser issue.
The surgery is closed at 6pm but appointments until 7pm and an onsite Pharmacy.

The last time l used the system it didn't work, l had chest pains around the heart area, so the wife drove me down to the surgery on the off chance. The building had no phones or electricity, spoke to reception within 10 minutes l was with a doctor she gave me handwriting note for A&E where l had an ECG in under 30 minutes, followed by xrays, blood tests and various doctors.
If it can work here why can it not work nationwide?
BTW l was all clear thankfully.
