Global isn’t the issue in question. It is “US”. The US does not have an actual left wing party. The country has no tradition of socialism in the way Europe does from it’s origins in the 19th century. And the Cold War obliterated any chance of anything ever embedding over there. Socialism is basically a swear word in US politics. On a national level if you mention it then you are unelectable The existence of a few very socialist members of congress - so small that they are called “the squad” doesn’t make the democrats left wing. Indeed their most famous left winger - Bernie, was actually Independent until he tried for the nomination. And we all know how that went
I'm hoping the Lineker story disappears and we can focus on the important fact. The policy of the government of this country is to make it illegal, illegal, to come to this country to seek asylum. Their policy is to make it illegal to come here (from a war-torn country or a country where you might be killed for being gay or for opposing the government) and say "Help me, please". This government is planning to make that action illegal. Making it almost impossible is not enough for this government. They plan to call you a criminal and to be able to deport you back to the country from which you fled. But for an accident of birth, those fleeing people could be you, your relatives and your friends. They are fellow humans whose crime is being born on the wrong side of a line on a map. And we're turning our back on them. I'm ashamed. Vin
Those lines drawn on the map and the oppressive regimes in control are in place due to western interference, military action and support.
You should not be ashamed. You should be ashamed of the nasty people who have written and proposed this cruel obscene proposed law.
Very proud of my constituency MP Caroline Noakes this morning who has told her whip she will not vote for this awful immigration bill today. She is one of the last few decent Tories left. Conservative MP Caroline Noakes has revealed she will not be voting for the Illegal Migration Bill, saying she has "absolute horror at the prospect". Romsey and Southampton North MP Ms Noakes told Times Radio: "I've made that clear to my whip, I can't vote for this. I didn't vote for the last one, I won't be voting for this one. "I might be an outlier in my party, but I think we have an absolute duty to treat people humanely to keep people safe. I have absolute horror at the prospect." Thank goodness there are one or two decent Tories left in this corrupt government.
Statement from Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie: “Everyone recognises this has been a difficult period for staff, contributors, presenters and, most importantly, our audiences. I apologise for this. The potential confusion caused by the grey areas of the BBC’s social media guidance that was introduced in 2020 is recognised. I want to get matters resolved and our sport content back on air. “Impartiality is important to the BBC. It is also important to the public. The BBC has a commitment to impartiality in its Charter and a commitment to freedom of expression. That is a difficult balancing act to get right where people are subject to different contracts and on air positions, and with different audience and social media profiles. The BBC’s social media guidance is designed to help manage these sometimes difficult challenges and I am aware there is a need to ensure that the guidance is up to this task. It should be clear, proportionate, and appropriate. “Accordingly, we are announcing a review led by an independent expert – reporting to the BBC – on its existing social media guidance, with a particular focus on how it applies to freelancers outside news and current affairs. The BBC and myself are aware that Gary is in favour of such a review. “Shortly, the BBC will announce who will conduct that review. Whilst this work is undertaken, the BBC’s current social media guidance remains in place. “Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend.” -- Statement from Gary Lineker: “I am glad that we have found a way forward. I support this review and look forward to getting back on air.”
Sensible statement from Tim Davie, to be fair to him. It didn't help that when all this blew up, he was in Washington (not his fault, just unfortunate), but it is important to also realise that it's a tricky balancing act, as he says. Good news that they're having a review. Hopefully that's the end of it all.
I would saay this lovely lady knows a whole lot more than either the BBC or the disgusting Tories.....
i thought I’d have a nose on this thread as the Lineker story has dominated the news so much. It’s nice to read the occasional properly balanced comment which wants to actually address the problem at hand in amongst a lot of “points scoring” the way our politics is discussed and reported needs serious attention.
No, it’s just that you are only exposed to certain media sources. Until you are willing to admit that CNN, MSNBC etc. are just as bad as Fox News, you aren’t anywhere near reality. You just think your version of the news is real. “When you notice that to produce you need to get permission from those who do not produce anything; when you check that money flows to those who do not deal with goods but with favors; when you realize that many become rich by the bribery and for influence more than by your work and that the laws do not protect you against them, but on the contrary, they are the ones who are protected against you; when you discover that corruption is rewarded and honesty becomes a self-sacrifice, then you can assert, without fear of being wrong, that your society is doomed” —Ayn Rand The above quote pretty much sums everything up nicely, in my opinion. The system is totally ****ed and both the dems, republicans in the US, the Tories & labour over here are all responsible. For things to have become as bad as they have become has taken decades & decades of neglect of the values and policies which made us great. The real problem, as I have said many times on here, is the broken monetary system which has misaligned the incentives of the politicians with the people.
This is mental. Why is it our problem to solve the rest of the worlds wealth problems? We have enough problems here.
