Massive result today, really feels different to the rest of the season in that we haven't really beaten any of the top teams this season and from what I saw of today we were doing things we weren't doing in our poor run of form. The first goal highlights that, I've seen us score very few of those types of goals this season, early cross with the striker getting across his man. We looked to get it forwards early and get in behind. Another 2 assists from our top assist makers Burns and Davis..Burns always seems to deliver in the big games, perhaps he gets more space to run into. We also have a midfield duo now who aren't just fancy dans, they've really got the the quality but no how and steel to win.
Did anyone hear Alex Mathie on Radio Suffolk ? He said any team that tries to outplay us will lose because we are the best footballing side in this division and the Championship, now i like listening to Alex because humorous but knowledgeable as only an ex pro footballer can be and when i thought about it hes right , i havent seen any team outplay us with quality football all season, any thoughts ?
I always have respected him, and of course, he is right! Only those.who sit back and defend their fortress have we struggled against. Bring on the Championship!
Yes completely agree with him. Very few if any teams will match us if they try to play us off the pitch, alot of teams sat when we were in our poor run of form which surprises me that literally none of the teams on our winning streak have say deep they've all tried to attack or press us.
It was never down to how the opposition set up. We were so slow in our build up that teams could camp in their penalty area and block everything. And we were painfully slow to recycle the ball. Now we get it to the front fast and we play one touch passes and crosses so there’s no time for them to retreat and organise.
To be fair, it was a combination of how they set up, our slow build up and endless pretty passing, several key injuries, KM tactics at the time of rotation and changes, sloppy defense and error prone goalie. What a different team we are now!
Agreed Gaffer. Teams still seem quite content to sit back and invite pressure from us, but whereas before we appeared to lack that extra dimension to cut defences open, we now look quite capable launching more direct attacks if required. The opener against Bolton is probably a good demonstration - rather than monopolise possession and look for an opening in the final third, we just hit an early ball to Burns, who ran up the pitch with it and put in a cross. As Gaffer also touched upon, a more settled starting eleven match-to-match with greater consistency in the team sheet has helped build those on-pitch partnerships. I definitely share the enthusiasm, although a part of me fears us dropping the ball - it would be classic Ipswich! We've must've said this once or twice a month lately, but these next three games (if the Barnsley one doesn't get called off) will be key to keeping the pace and possibly overtaking one of the top two, as well as proving we can win away from home against potential play off opposition.
