Probably been done before, but with an international break i thought it would keep us busy and debating until we batter Stoke! We've had some fabulous players over the years so this won't be easy.To narrow it down a little i've only picked players post WW2.Here is my humble opinion: 1.Phil Parkes 406 apps 0 goals superb keeper and unlucky not to win more England caps. 2.Dave Clement 472 apps 28 goals top class England right back, died tragically at the age of just 34. 3.Ian Gillard 479 apps 11 goals England international left-back,starred alongside Clement in 75-76 season. 4.Terry Fenwick 307 apps 45 goals England centre-half,scored in 82 cup final and skippered us to the 2nd division title in 82-83. 5.Alan McDonald 476 apps 18 goals no nonsense centre-half who as well as captaining us also gained a club record 52 caps while at QPR with Northern Ireland. 6.Terry Venables 205 apps 22 goals influential midfielder was a key figure in our 72-73 promotion success and returned to manage us from 80-84. 7.Dave Thomas 219 apps 34 goals England winger skillful dribbler who played a major part in our 72-73 promotion and our division 1 runners-up season in 75-76. 8.Gerry Francis (capt) 347 apps 65 goals England and hoops captain and midfield dynamo he was our inspiration in 72-73 and 75-76,returned to twice manage us. 9.Les Ferdinand 169 apps 90 goals Sir Les was quite simply awesome, the England centre-forward was the leading marksman as we finished 5th in the 92-93 Premier league. 10.Stan Bowles 315 apps 96 goals Stan the man was probably the most gifted player to ever wear the hoops, woefully overlooked by England he thrilled the hoop faithful and was key in our 72-73 and 75-76 campaigns and in our 76-77 UEFA Cup exploits. 11.Rodney Marsh 242 apps 134 goals super talented he was QPR's leading marksman five times, including a club record 44 goals in our 66-67 3rd division title and League Cup double success.A club idol this would be the only time he and Stan joined forces. Managerave Sexton masterful coach who took us to within an inch of winning the 75-76 league, also took us to the League Cup semi's and the UEFA Cup 1/4's in 76-77. Subsavid Seaman;David Bardsley;Bob Hazell;Trevor Sinclair;Don Givens;Ray Wilkins;Mick Leach and Clive Allen. I know i've left out some great players but now it's your turn to put me right!!
Superb post Hoopton. What a team that would have made. Have to say i'm a little young for some of the players up above but just looking at some of the names brings back awesome memories. Although several if not all of these players would probably make great captains, IMO Fenwick would always be the man for me. Always remember how solid Bardsley was as well. He was our Mr reliable, a Denis Irwin type of player. How much would you pay for a Les Ferdinand type of player now? WOW
Just two that i can think of that would probably make my squad. Paul Parker - Versatile and very good player for both club and country. Clive Wilson - Was Mr Reliable for me and was outstanding at the time we were top london club. Not sure on Venables - Think he was a better manager than player. One hell of a team though mate, some great players in there.
Rather than just repeat many of your players Hammy, I’ve formed a new team using some of your reserves, and other players, some who have already been mentioned. 1. David Seaman MBE – 141 apps – Started his England career while still at Loftus Road, bought by Arsenal for a record fee for a goalkeeper. 2. David Bardsley – 253 apps - 4 goals – Would certainly challenge Clement for the right back spot, a fantastic crosser of the ball. Even after being out injured for 2 season came back as good as ever. 3. Clive Wilson – 173 apps - 12 goals – Outstanding left back, again, would strongly challenge Gillard for the number 3 shirt. Followed Gerry Francis to Spurs. 4. Don Masson – 116 apps – 18 goals – The final piece added by Dave Sexton to the greatest QPR team of all time. A quality player maker. 5. Paul Parker – 125 apps – 1 goal – Fast England international central defender, could leap like a salmon, bought by Man Utd. 6. Stevie Wicks – 189 apps – 6 goals – 6’ 2”, eyes of blue, Stevie Wicks is after you.... cult hero 7. Trevor Sinclair – 168 apps – 16 goals – Another England international, scorer of the greatest goal of all time. (I’m playing him on the right.) Stuck with us for one season after we were relegated from the Premier League. 8. John Gregory – 161 apps – 36 goals – attacking midfield player, very determined, yet another England International 9. Clive Allen – 136 apps – 72 goals – The ultimate finisher, should have played more for England 10. Roy Wegerle – 65 apps – 29 goals – I needed a number 10 and Stan was gone. Best remembered for his goal at Leeds. 11. Andy Sinton – 121 apps – 22 goals – Another England player – scored in that match at Old Traford I really wanted Sinclair on the left but was struggling for a right winger, so like many managers before me, I’m playing one of my best players out of position. It was a tossup between Wegerle and Stainrod or even Byrne, but I needed a genuine No 10. Anyway, I reckon they would give your team a match.
this is bloody hard but here goes; 1 Dave Seaman: Top Keeper just beats Phil Parkes 2 Dave Clement: RIP Dave 3 Clive Wilson: one of the best to play in the hoops 4 Don Masson: class 5 Alan McDonald: Frightened the ****e out of any striker 6 Frank McLintock: even at the end of his career top defender 7 Dave Thomas: Tricky winger fastest thing on 2 legs 8 Gerry Francis; Englands best Captain, Best mullet in english football 9 Les Ferdinand: Best no 9 we have ever had 10 Stanley Bowles: Best left foot in history, lousy tipster 11 Andy Sinton: Pace and more Pace Manager Gordon Jago.
Andy Sinton, what a great little player he was. Think he only got the odd international cap?. For me Macca and Fenwick have to be the CBs so not quite sure where to play Parker. I am sure i will get criticism for this but IMO i would take Bardsley over Parker all day.
Good teams Roller and peter,we really have had some great players.I told you i had to leave out some legends!!
Just noticing Dave Clement being mentioned, does anyone remember us having his testimonial after his tragic death, just a few days before the cup final in '82???? 28,000 Rangers fans in Loftus Road. What a magical moment that was.
Rollercoaster, is that Wegerle goal at Leeds the one where he does the Wegerle Wiggly all the way through about 5 of their players? as in, this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOUaDs_55E4 I wouldn't say greatest ever XI but Paul Furlong surely deserves an honourable mention
That will be the one Carlos. Great clip. The Clive Allen goal that you can access from that link is a memorable one too!
Too many to list for an honourable mention Carlos,i'd still be going now!But your right i loved big paul,Andy Impey and King Kevin Gallen, see what i mean you've started me off!
Clearly none of those would warrant a place in the best ever, unless..... best post Vauxhall Motors and pre Warnock. That would cover some much loved players such as Wild Thing, Rowly, Birch, Cookie etc.... Maybe make that tomorrow's thread?
Could call it 'QPR's all time Honourable Mention Starting XI plus subs'. Think a lot of the best players have been covered in this thread but an honourable mention thread could be huge. There's also an interesting book in the clubshop which covers all players who have ever played for QPR to date, well worth a skim through if you're in there
If you read what I have written, I have picked a team not using any of the players that Hammy used. He had Dave Thomas and Sir Les in his team. There will be others I've forgotten though....
