I'm no expert in the Manchester City model, so a genuine question: How much do you actually think it will benefit the community and why? What sort of opportunities would it open if its on Walton Street and not somewhere with more room to expand in the East Riding? I appreciate there will be a few more security/cleaning etc jobs when its up and running, but wouldn't most of the specialist stuff be off limits to the public?
There's no detailed plans, so we don't actually know what they'd include, but the Man City Campus includes sports facilities open to the public, along with a hotel and even a sixth form college (though obviously ours won't be anywhere near as big as theirs, if it happens at all, which seems increasingly unlikely).
Millwall Football Club has been given full planning permission for a new training ground. The Championship club, based in Bermondsey, South East London, plans to build the new asset in West Kingsdown, near Brands Hatch in Kent. It has been given the go ahead for the state-of-the-art facilities on a 50-acre plot which the club says will be among the best in the country. Sevenoaks Council originally approved the plans for the construction of a training academy last October, and full permission has now been granted. The site will include buildings for groundsman and security, indoor and outdoor football pitches, artificial turf and training areas, as well as car and cycle parking and hard and soft landscaping. Planning adviser Nicola Gooch of law firm Irwin Mitchell said: ‘We are excited that this project can now proceed and Millwall can create the state-of-the-art training complex which reflects the club’s long-term ambitions. ‘The facility will help the club in its push to the Premier League and to develop the young players that will keep them there. It has been a long and complex process and we wish the club every success going forward.’
And move the fair to a site that it can have more space and possibly even be bigger. The desire to develop alternative sites for that and a sports village would show a greater intent from both club and council.
Im not really sure what else could go there really. A leisure centre wouldn’t be an option as the council are spending millions doing up Albert Ave. It feels like the wrong area for shopping and a hotel. Any sort of entertainment complex runs the risk of moving more footfall out of the city centre, which the council won’t want. Would the council really want to spend money moving Hull Fair for housing? Doubt it. Not really sure what would be a successful building there long term that would persuade the council to part with a site for the fair.
Advantage for Millwall us their land will appreciate pretty quickly ours won’t in our inner city location .
Maybe time to stop doing what is best for the City and do whats best for the club... the results will then benefit the City... **** the fair and Walton Street...
Are you saying Hull is not on the up? The main point is Millwall are planning an academy on a 50 acre site. We are talking a sports village, 12,000 stadium and an academy on a site less than half the size. Which shows how impractical the idea is. Even without the Hull Fair issue.
How do these names work then? Have we got a sports Hamlet at the minute, or are the bigger ones now really sports Towns?
I think what we are trying to do wherever is great , just saying that most developments are built on the understanding they will grow in monetary value and that in The South that value will grow way quicker than here. There is very little philanthropy anywhere these days , if Acun is doing it for that reason primarily then he is a wonderful human being . As for the City being on the up yes I think it is in some respects but as always has been , it’s a slow process . If I won the Euro lottery most would go on this City in some ways or other but then I’d have to deal with the council and I don’t have that many years left !!
You’ll have to be quick and respond to the consultation that’s already running for deciding what things should on there (and what to do with Ice Arena) https://yoursay.hull.gov.uk/west-docklands *few interesting bits if anyone hadn’t seen it. Including cruise terminal & for some bizarre reason (IMHO) building more offices
Millwall's ground is 18 miles away from their new training ground, and not even in London. Same with the big London clubs, typically 20 miles or so away, out of London in other counties! So following their lead, ours could be on Beverley Westwood (about as much chance with planning permission as there is with getting Walton Street!!), or Gilberdyke, Market Weighton, Driff, or ..... Withernsea?
