John Motson. Loved his comment when Martin Buchan was captain of Man Utd when they won the FA Cup. “How appropriate it is that a Buchan is climbing the 39 steps to lift the Cup.” The old Wembley had 39 steps and Motson had a mind full of these things and must have stored that up and been delighted to put it to use.<laugh>

I can still hear his voice even though it’s been years since I’ve heard it on telly. For me the best sports commentator, actually I’ll re-phrase that.. the best best commentator.. ever.. if he red the phone book to you, it would be entertaining… RIP Motty, be at rest sir, your job is done…

Don’t think he is the best commentator ever, some people used to criticise him a lot, but you realise his ability and appreciate it more with the benefit of hindsight listening to the current lot.

Really sad news to hear of the passing of John Motson, one of the best commentators around, who brought so many games to life during my lifetime. RIP John

Just found this, Motty replied to someone asking how to get into sports commentary. As I read it I could actually hear his voice, what a lovely man for taking the time to write back, not too many would do that today citing being way too busy. Top man Motty !!!

    RIP Motty....
I grew up listening to him when he did radio for the BBC. One of the, if not, the best of all time...

Hugh Johns, Gerald Sinstadt, John Motson. Top three in my book.

Tributes have poured in for Margaret Thatcher's long-serving press secretary Sir Bernard Ingham after his death aged 90.

The renowned former civil servant, who was also press secretary to hard-left Labour MP Tony Benn earlier in his career, passed away after a short illness, his family said.

Lord Powell, who was Mrs Thatcher's foreign policy advisor and went to see Sir Bernard in hospital last week, told MailOnline that he was a 'great man' and an 'outstanding' civil servant.
I know this is a RIP and no personal comments are supposed to be allowed ,but been a Dolie in the early eighties by Christ he certainly ground my gears
