First Test, Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui (day-night, day three of five) England 325-9 dec (Brook 89, Duckett 84; Wagner 4-82) & 374 (Root 57, Brook 54, Foakes 51) New Zealand 306 (Blundell 138; Robinson 4-54) & 63-5 (Broad 4-21) New Zealand need 331 runs to win and England need 5 wkts.
Yeah he ended with better figures than Broad in the end. His average is down below 26 for career and below 30 away from England
Jimmy, 5 months short of 41, has returned to number 1 in the world bowling standings, ousting Pat Cummings.
Definitely England GOAT bowler (and Root is likely to follow in the batting department by the end of his career ).
Superb bowler now (he wasn't always) and Root is a very, very good batter, but GOAT's for England, no. Since you can never compare era's the whole GOAT issue, while attractive as a source of debate, can never be satisfyingly settled. Except perhaps in the case of a Bradman, who outshone his peers by so much there can be little debate he would have graced any era.
I was playing around with statistics (and you know how they can be manipulated) anyway if you use the last 10 years Jimmy has had an average of 22.68 in 101 matches. Career average has just dipped below 26 at 25.94 and overseas average is just below 30 now. It took him a while to learn his craft, but the last ten years has been phenomenal and his body has been able to hold up until now. You can see how much the top teams such as India and Australia respect him even when those teams are playing at home, because they don't look to score against him just survive and make hay against the other bowlers. Long may his form continue!
Completely agree! It’s just a shame his first 150 wickets or so cost him well above 30. From memory. The likes of Steyn and McGrath got their wickets from day one cheaper, more efficiently, and in different conditions. He only falls down in the first third of his career. From then on he’s a superstar.
Second Test, Wellington, (day one of five) England 315-3 (65 overs): Brook 184*, Root 101*; Henry 2-64 New Zealand: Yet to bat Good day for us again. Girls play semi final later today. Well worth a watch
Watched the last two sessions so never saw a wicket taken. Brook not the classic Root, Gower etc type batter, but his timing and power are awesome. He now has the most runs in a careers first nine innings in history. Also the sixth person to post four centuries in their first six matches.
Finish day two well on top. Unfortunately Brook was out straight away in the morning. Early declaration again, as soon as Root reached 150. Anderson with three early wickets.
Second Test, Wellington, (day two of five) England 435-8 dec: Brook 186, Root 153*; Henry 4-100 New Zealand 138-7: Latham 35; Anderson 3-37, Leach 3-45 Another good day for England
Second Test, Wellington, (day three of five) England 435-8 dec (Brook 186, Root 153*; Henry 4-100) New Zealand 209 (Southee 73, Broad 4-61) & 202-3 (Latham 83, Conway 61) New Zealand trail by 24 runs
