Not only should it stand but there should be no other option like independent or IOC athlete for any Russian or Belarusian athletes or competitors.

Not knowing anything about them I've got nothing against the individual's and it is likely v harsh on some who do not support what their county is doing but this ban absolutely has to stand and there should be no option to compete as an independent. This is the sort of thing that can help to turn public opinion, not necessarily against the war itself but perhaps against the regime and how their decisions are impacting the the lives of Russians.

Harsh to ban individuals based off the actions of a government, unless they have links/ties. Not sure our (western governments) holier than thou attitude is great either though.

Absolutely the ban should continue. I don't think they have a choice on the IOC option for individuals due to Olympic charter and rules.

If they are Russian or Belarusian then they stay banned.

If they want to be given rights again. Fight back against their regime and make a stance and get Putin and his generals locked up for war crimes.

What is different now then? I thought 'independent' competitors had been allowed previously, on the basis they had fled from the banned country.

I'm not sure it's right to impact individuals who have spent their life preparing for Olympics - there is so much dedication and sacrifice required to compete at international level.

i'd definitely ban the countries, but personally I would allow the individuals on the following basis:

    1. They have fled the banned country and denounced the acts of said government.

    2. Are already in the process of seeking citizenship within another country compering at the Olympics.

    3. By competing 'independently', they are giving up all rights to compete for their original country, even if bans were to be lifted in the future (i.e. they are making a firm commitment now that they do not want to be associated to that country).

    4. They have no direct links / ties to the government or military of the banned country.

I think that still sends a bold statement to the world, as people will see individual athletes shunning their banned country and making a commitment to compete for another nation instead. Russia's loss.

The link is called a passport. The point of sanctions is to put pressure on the countries involved. Innocent people are suffering in Ukraine through an illegal invasion. Banning Russian and Belarusian athletes is absolutely the right thing to do. If they want to compete they can renounce their citizenship.

Russia and Belarus should be isolated from the rest of the world in everything.

I don’t know. Have to confess that I am having second thoughts about this.

On further reflection I would contend that perhaps Russia should still be allowed to participate in games of chance such as say Roulette.
