And in some good news, you may (or may not) be interested to know that Betfair has us at odds suggesting we have a 77% chance of being relegated. So near enough a 3/4 chance. It's not good but equally it really isn't a foregone conclusion. One chance in four of escape isn't grounds for all the "we're already down" comments. Vin
Today’s meeting between Southampton and Jesse Marsch progressed well, the American will become the club’s new manager if he accepts their offer #saintsfc @ManagerTactical
Shocking appointment if it’s true. Brings on such unnecessary pressure from day 1 on Marsch himself and the board. Why would any team be afraid of playing us? Why would the players be all in on him from day 1? They needed someone to go in the changing room who could immediately get them on their side, instead they’re going to be listening to a bloke while thinking “hang on you got sacked a few weeks ago didn’t ya?”. Farcical. If we end up losing 4-0 on his first game there will be zero faith in the man from that point on and if St Mary’s was already toxic then it’ll now be ****ing Chernobyl. I don’t understand the defeatist attitude here, we are 4 POINTS from safety with a game in hand of Everton. We could easily stay up with the right pick. I’d love to eat my words in a few weeks but I just don’t see these players backing him after they literally just didn’t back a manger who had little PL experience.
Looks like it is Marsch then, being reported in mainstream news too now. At first I thought it was bizarre to hire a guy that has failed in his last 2 jobs and literally just been sacked by a fellow struggler because he was looking like taking them down. And now? Yep, still think it iz bizarre. But it is pretty clear that no one else wants to join us in the state we are in. So out of all the available managers, Marsch is probably not an awful candidate - certainly better than Lampard, Gerrard or Rooney. I think he will take us down but all we can do is get behind him 100% and hope!
Without knowing who else was around and interested I can’t think of anyone obvious who I would prefer to Marsch. His Leeds team was good to watch if not anything else and at this point that will do me. Only other candidate from the odds list who I probably would’ve preferred would be Rafa but I doubt he would be interested in the job
It doesn’t feel like that to me. If this happens tonight or tomorrow then Marsch was 1st choice for them which just opens up so many damn questions about SR. Has there ever been a manager who was sacked and then rehired by that league within a week? Let alone did a good job in that scenario. I’m going to go with no because it’s just so innately stupid.
Your opening paragraph contains a great deal of supposition and as such is only your opinion - not fact. Wait until after two matches to make your biased opinion and see what transpires
Not sure about the bit in bold. Jones was only sacked yesterday so if someone is appointed today or tomorrow that suggests we've moved quickly and they're near the top of our wish list. I don't think you can conclude nobody else was interested.
Who would be your preference? Just looking at the bookies odds the realistic options seem to be: Marsch Gerrard Selles Lampard Rooney Allardyce Nuno (not sure how realistic that is) Or someone else not mentioned who you would like?
Is it really a huge leap to think the hiring of Marsch won’t bring with it a huge amount of skepticism from the fans and players? Imagine if you’re working at a Warehouse that’s going to go under soon unless huge improvements are made, you’ve just lost your terrible manager who couldn’t organise **** and then you find out your CEO has now hired a guy who used to run a slightly better Warehouse but was sacked just last week because he couldn’t organise his Warehouse properly. Why would you put in 100% for that guy?
The clear pro for Marsch is that his style is very similar to Ralph's so most players won't have much adapting to do. The only question marks would be the January signings. I quite like this appointment if it gets done.
Anyone but Lampard/Rooney/Gerrard. I feel the need to emphasise that it’s not my issue with Marsch’s talent. I really don’t know much about the guy, it’s just the absolutely unecessacary pressure that hiring him puts on the club that is already in a horrible state as it is. He loses his first game badly then people will most likely be against him instantly. If I really had to pick then I would have liked Gallardo and I really would have liked to have seen Bielsa’s name pop up because I believe he’d stick around in the championship.
Yeah I get the logic about that. I think most fans will feel similar to the Jones appointment and if Marsch doesn’t hit the ground running the atmosphere will turn quickly, so it is another risky appointment. There just doesn’t seem like an obvious candidate we are missing out on, and if he can replicate his style of play here that he had at Leeds then I think fans will warm to him. He is very similar to Ralph in that if Leeds had taken some of the chances they created in games they’d be a solid mid table side, hopefully our dynamic forward line can take a few I think I’d be done with the club if they appointed Bielsa, complete fraud of a manager. Interesting how different people have different opinions
Marsch is a worse appointment from a PR perspective than a footballing perspective. His record is a bit all over the place, but of the realistic names we are getting he is one of the better ones. And in the likelihood we get relegated I think he could do well in the Championship. People will be sceptical but if he can get us fighting and pulling some results out then people will start to support him even if we go down. I also think we have a better team than Leeds and he did have them outside of the relegation zone at time of sacking, only just I know.
So you honestly think these players, who just failed to back a manager with little PL experience, are now going to be giving 100% to Marsch? A manager with little PL experience who was just sacked? And I can say the exact same of the fans in that regard too. We can all **** on NJ as much as we like but do we honestly think he didn’t try and get across some ideas and a style of play? Of course he would have, the players just didn’t go all in for it. I think in any job we’d all be the same if were working under similar circumstances.
