I've been following City from the 1968/1969 season and the first keeper I remember is Mike 'Gibbo' Gibson who used to take a couple of steps along the goal line and then jump up and touch the crossbar when warming up. Other keepers I remember over the years are as follows but there must be a lot I've forgotten ? Ray Cashley Len Bond Jon Shaw Jan Moller Mike (Jock) Mahoney Keith Waugh Keith Welch Steve (England's Number 1 ) Phillips Mike Stowell Adriano Basso Andy Leaning David James Frank Fielding Dan Bentley Max O'Leary
Mike Gibson was a great goalie, I think he was about 5'- 8" tall, another good keeper was Bob Anderson was with us for 5 years in the 50s please log in to view this image Mike Gibson in action..
Thanks Wiz Bob Anderson was a bit before my time but I must have missed loads of other more recent ones. The early 80's period and our fall down the leagues is a bit of a mental block for me.....
Tom Heaton is missing from that list. And some of the donkeys LJ had. Plus that dimlow from New Zealand that managed one game
Who was the keeper that joined City on an emergency loan for one game (away to Carlisle?) at the end of the season? The game was many years ago and if my memory serves me correctly we ended up getting promoted from league One afterwards. I don't think he ever saw the inside of Ashton Gate during his very short stay but was instrumental in us going up, and I think his tenure was in the late 80's or early 90's. I can also remember our keeper getting injured in a match versus Notts Forest at Ashton Gate and an outfield player was the only available replacement, and he earned us a draw with a couple of good saves. I know he was not on our list as a goalie but he filled the boots.
Luke Steele - our keeper on our run to the semi-finals of the league cup a few years ago. Let's hope we can repeat the magic of the Man Utd game against their neighbors in the FA Cup soon. Was he one of LJ's donkeys - asking for RP

I've seen all the keepers, from the Flying Pig to Max, for me Basso was the best. It was tough to admit at the time as he took over from one of my best pals Steve Phillips. Steve would have been a top cricketer but for City, Max was also showing signs of a good cricketer at Bath before signing for City.
I agree about Basso. He did everything right. His stature was probably the only reason he didn’t play at a higher level - he was short by goalkeeper standards.
Thanks for all the missing names people I think Tony Cook was also pre Gibbo ? Ronnie Sinclair was around the time of Andy Leaning when we beat Chelsea 3-1 in the cup ?
I can remember Tony Cook during my early visits to Ashton Gate in the sixties and he was a reasonable goalkeeper.
I know it's another team but I remember a goalie for Charlton in the sixties named Peter Wakeham. Every time the ball was crossed into his penalty area the entire crowd shouted "OOOPS" because usually he dropped the ball. Not nice EH? Any stories about a City goalie who got that kind of mocking?
I would put Gibbo ahead of Basso and Phillips, simply based on what they have available .. from training to kit available ...Heavier balls pre Basso, then there is their gloves and better footwear. Making comparisons is really only possible on a like for like basis, irrespective of what you are comparing! Where would you draw the line?
Gibson was the first keeper I remember so I had no comparison to make at the time and was fairly young, I have a vision of him being amazing, and loved the way he interacted with the crowd, and jumped and touched the bar before each game. For that reason he’s my favourite, but I’m not sure it’s an objective assessment, or with rose tinted glasses.
It doesn’t matter It’s the memories that count and we’re obviously of an age if he was also the first City keeper that you saw, like me
