How effective were Millwall who have out balls but only managed a couple of attempts on target, one of which was a fluke from a defender.

We were ineffective because of the brutal nature of the game, it wasn't all down to Stewart's absence, we've played like that when he's been on the pitch.

At the risk of being ostracised, can someone please explain to me what this new phenomenon called 'out ball' is? I've just become used to the term 'phases' and now you throw in something new to learn.

When we're defending a corner or a free-kick close to our goal, an 'outball' is somewhere to play from defence where one of our players could be, rather than just clearing it to a player from the attacking team and the ball coming straight back :emoticon-0148-yes:

Great thread as always @RTB - I'm cacking me pants for this one, not coz I think we wont give a good account of ourselves but it will be end to end and a nerve jangling game.
I think we will be able to nick this
Danny Batth from a corner and then Amad in extra time for a squeakybum 2-1

I've thought that we might be somewhat careful in this one 'cos the league's our priority and we're never going to win the cup anyway, but I think that I might be wrong 'cos we've got now't to lose or fear and the bairns won't be scared of Fulham.

The only fear for me is us, the crowd, not being as enthusiastic as the players . . . . I don't expect a very good attendance, Fulham won't bring many, and the atmosphere might well let us down. I'll still be doing my bit, but I don't expect us to be as loud as I'd like.

Neither team will want extra time, so it'll probably be 'end to end' which will help to increase the excitement, and I'm just hoping that we'll be playing Leeds next month :emoticon-0148-yes:

It's the term used to describe the way a team on the defensive and under pressure can find a pass forward to a team member, who has found some space to hold up the ball and retain possession until other team mates have got up the pitch to join him. It tries to stop the likelihood that any fly clearance will be picked up by the opposition and will come straight back at the defence. It requires strength and close control from the front player, usually identified as tall and strong,as these clearances tend to be aerial. Ross is good at it.
However,in our case,a note of caution is required,as many of these moments occur at opposition set pieces and, more often than not,our striker,to whom we would have gone with the outball, was back in our box helping to defend and so wasn't up the pitch anyway.
The good teams have someone who peels out wide and that then becomes the outball,if there is the composure to play it.

It used to be called 'ball out' pre-decimal.

Some good explanations about 'out-ball' have been already posted. Its 'clearing the lines' (whatever that means) to your own player so it does not come immediately back.
Being ready or up for a counter attack is also part of an out ball (is it a Americanism).

If we had a large volatile crowd backing us with what we once called a cup tie atmosphere, then I would have fancied our chances. However, this will not be the case so I can only see an away win.

This for me looking at the forward options and Fulham will probably go full strength after resting 7 for the home tie.

I think we should always leave someone mid way between the box and the half way line! Not only does it give that “out ball”, it also means at least one extra player stays out of our box

Needed to play a number of the 7 to get their goal though! Don’t underestimate us. Dangerous thing to do

Mowbray on playing without a striker

    “Obviously Geldhardt can’t play.

“We have to find a way as we did for three months when I first arrived.

“Hopefully we will have an attacking force on the pitch that when we have the ball we can ask questions of them and try and threaten their goal

“It’s less easy without a noted centre-forward who likes to play down the middle and wants to be a centre-forward

“We will hopefully ask enough questions of Fulham so we can threaten their goal and to try and win the game.”

Reports of tickets sold are disappointing, if true. I would have been happy to lose in the 3rd round but I'm still going FFS :)

Can anyone explain our fanbases inability to turn up for home cup games? Our fanbase is great, massive numbers for home and away games every week, apart from home cup games. £15 to me seems reasonable considering its around £12 to get into a National League North game. I understand its not the most glamorous tie but even look at the Manchester United semi final 1st leg in 2014, the attendance was terrible (atmosphere was good though, but would’ve been unbelievable if ground was full).

Around about 28K it’ll be. That’s not bad imo.
