We only lost three times by more than one goal under Ralph this season. Spurs, Man City & Newcastle. There is no evidence we are harder to beat, we’re still getting beaten. It comes to something when you think only losing by one goal is an improvement
Why give Bree his debut in this match of all matches? Why didn't our best CB play despite us starting 3 of them? Why did Lavia start both legs on the bench but play 80 minutes vs Blackpool? Absolutely bonkers decision making and a really disappointing way for this cup run to end. Needs to make it up to us in the FA Cup.
I do wonder how long Jones rope is with SR. Do we have him until the end of the season regardless of performances and results? If we lost the next 4 fixtures, Brentford A, Wolves H, Chelsea A, Leeds A does he go then? By which point, any replacement would have a near impossible job to turn it around. For those that are still backing Jones how long would you give him? Genuinely interested.
His post match comments were totally predictable as well: "Newcastle didn't have a chance in the 2nd half when we identified the problems". No Nathan, Newcastle sat back and were managing the game. He really doesn't see what everyone else see's does he?
Not to mention the problems he 'identified' were of his own doing by playing a **** formation that doesn't work and the wrong players to go with it.
Gives the impression that he is more interested in being right than learning when things don’t work. Re the other point in another post about how long SR give him, the Bree signing suggests they are fully behind him at the moment. Realistically you’d have to say if we lose to Brentford and Wolves he should be off but I don’t think that will be the case. We are now at the point where we need to hope NJ succeeds because he will be here until the point of no recovery for the PL.
You have to give him until the end of the season. Absolutely no point changing it now. He's had a tough start but now has players in the door that we have been crying out for. The players seem to like him. I like him. I don't see much wrong with his press conferences, I've watched them all in full not just snippets and not just random quotes taken out of context and rehashed on twitter. I've read some accounts from Journos who also enjoy the press conferences. I feel we have been improving and now with the final pieces in the jigsaw, and with everyone staying fit, I am confident we will move up the table.
I don't see how you can keep your train of negativity going constantly. Seasons go by, and every season you start early going on about us definitely going down; every season you're wrong. Then you guarantee early in the window we're getting no signings and the club won't spend; you continue to be wrong. Now we have the signings, including the striker everyone's been crying out for, but you're convinced they won't make any difference. Of course he'll be given time to bed in the new signings - that's the entire point of him being given signings! Surely you don't think the best approach to staying up would be to back a manager with new players, and then sack him? If anything, you should now be happy - you can start to judge him now he has some players he wanted. We may go down, we may stay up - either way, NJ will likely be at the helm. If you can't see that part of the reason he was chosen was to maintain continuity if we go down, then you're missing the point. We are all just punters with emotional connections - the board are in this for millions of £. So the decisions they make are probably likely to be taken less lightly than we think. And NJ doesn't lie to our faces - lying to us about something that we have all just watched wouldn't do him any favours. Like all managers, he interprets a game, and at worst puts his own spin on it to fit a narrative. It's usually in his or the club's favour. Every manager in the world does it.
So we have done it less under Jones the, especially considering Brighton was essentially his 1st game. And in fairness, had Ralph had a competent striker I think we would be mid table. My point is that no matter who the manager, with our attack we have no chance. Now we are competing in every game we play in, a goalscorer could be the difference. Time will tell.
I don't have a strong view either way on Jones but the interviews really do rub me up the wrong way sometimes. When we lose he sometimes seems to go into full self-protection mode. Saying last night he'd told the players about runners from midfield and so on. It all feels a bit "Not my fault!" and I'm not sure how well that will work in the long run. Think back to the likes of Alex Ferguson who'd often defend his players in public and tear them to bits in the dressing room.
Jones reminds me a bit of my daughter when she was in her teens. If I asked her a question like "Have you got any homework today" She would answer "Oh Dad, you are always moaning about my work, I am not lazy and am working hard, I came top of my class in Maths last year and am currently doing really well in English" "Oh sorry, I just asked if you had any homework, as your mother and I were going to take you out for a pizza..." He is so defensive and thinks everyone is trying to say he is doing a bad job (he is). It is the sign to me of someone who deep down knows he is out of his depth.
My definition of hard to beat is - don't lose many games - so far under the new manager's tenure we have won 3 and lost 9 [I think] only one win was in the league. Regardless of the underlying conditions, players etc, this would indicate we are not very hard to beat at all, 0-1 gains you the same points as 0-3.
Absolutely. For him to come out and say we're hard to beat is laughable and just shows how out of his depth he is.
It must be a catch 22 for some people. If he keeps us up playing this style of play then obviously he will be here next season where Elite pizza, Jones definitely a pepperoni fan
I think a lot of Natty J's problem is that he simply doesn't have half of the charisma that Ralph possesses and he is not being allowed any benefit of doubt so early in his tenure and he has been judged harshly from day one because he came from a smaller club. Ralph made just as many puzzling team selections but was cut some slack by many fans including myself (I still have man love for him!). I've never been a fan of 3 CBs as it takes away another attacking option and i'm hoping that with the addition of new players NJ will change to a back four. It is early days but the next month is vital and we do need to turn those narrow defeats into points pretty soon and I personally would like us to be a bit more attractive and attacking in our style of play but I can understand the cautious approach up until now. I think that SR have made their choice of manager and will probably stand by him unless we go on a horror run of results, so I will keep backing him for now at least. I couldn't give a flying **** about what he says in pressers as long as he starts delivering performances and results and he will soon win fans over if they improve.
