The railway gauges are different in Russia (1.52M) and Korea (1.435M, "standard" gauge). According the report I found, there is one crossing point only. Goods are transfered from standard gauge car to Russian gauge and vice-versa in a yard. The yard is on the Korean side of the bridge. Therefore Russian trains cross into Korea so technically the same train could be seen on both sides of the border but only in the short track between the transfer yard and the border.

I know the gauge is different, been on a passenger train entering Russia and they lifted the whole carriage to change the bogies.

My point is the news throws out a story but not all of it, leaving a lot to be inferred or imagined.

So, it was quite possible for a North Korean train to be inside the Russian border?

No, as the yard is in North Korea. The Russian train can cross the border to the yard but the korean train can't enter Russia.

IF what Oregan Tiger posted is right.

There is a small area where there are dual gauge tracks enabling trains to cross, but not far and where loads can be swapped over or different bogies attached.Reached across something called the Friendship Bridge which only reopened last year after being closed for some time. You can see the two sets of tracks on the bottom track on the photo.

The crossing has been closed for two years due to covid restrictions, now it has reopened for trade both ways. The USA take some pictures and claim / suggest that North Korea is supplying arms to Russia. The first quotes are from a monitoring outfit called 38 North on Reuters news site, those in bold from Railfreight.com

"It is impossible to determine the purpose of the train from the imagery, but the crossing comes amid reports of arms sales from North Korea to Russia and a general expectation of the resumption of trade between the two countries,"

"Whether a transfer of material was in progress could not be determined, and the parked locations of these train sets may have been unrelated," the report said.

The White House said on Wednesday that Washington had information indicating North Korea was covertly supplying Russia with a "significant" number of artillery shells for its war in Ukraine and was attempting to obscure the shipments by funneling them through countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Rail freight services between Russia and North Korea have been reinstated for the first time since 2020, when they were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first train left Russia and will reach North Korea through the Khasan-Tumangan border crossing, in southeastern Russia.

The train was loaded with peculiar cargo: 30 purebred Orlov Trotter horses were in fact loaded on the train heading towards North Korea. Russia Railways has reportedly claimed that the next train bound for Pyongyang will be loaded with medical supplies. However, the exact date of the shipment was not made available as of yet.

You said a train could not cross over. It can. What was being transported is irrelevant.

I said if what Oregan Tiger posted is correct a North Korean train cannot cross the border but a Russian train can enter North Korea but only as far as the goods yard.

But before all that i questioned the integrity of the medias reporting of the story.

I often wonder, did anyone ever hear Schroedinger's dead cat bounce ? The uncertainty is irksome.

I'd be much more surprised if North Korea WASN'T selling at least ammunition, but also weapons, to Russia. Why wouldn't they? They regime has a good relationship with Putin and nothing to lose.

There're a pariah state desperately in need of both hard currency and trade. They are quite rightly sanctioned by the rest of the world so Russia is an obvious source of both.

Back in September last year they were even offering tens of thousands of "volunteers" to go fight in Donbas with the Russians.
