The 2011 Return of Mares, a catalogue of all mares covered by stallions in Great Britain and Ireland during 2011, as well as all the recorded foals born in those two countries during 2011, has hit my desk this morning. Last year I put up the list of all the mares covered by SEA THE STARS, so this time I will list the foals produced by those mares. Are there any other stallion figures that people want to know about? Now that the information is in the public domain I am more than happy to put up the covering figures for all the GB and IRE stallions. So, is there a particular stallion you want to know about? Do you have a favourite mare and want to know who she was covered by this year? I wonât be able to post the answers until later this afternoon as one of my colleagues is now working through the book but do ask the questions now and I will come back with the answers later on.
Hi PN, Me and an old college friend met up for the first time in couple of years and got discussing about a horse we followed religiously in our college years. She was called Turbo Linn. She rattled off about 6 or 7 wins in a row, then following a couple of poor runs, she never ran again. Do you know if she is being covered, or has had any foals already? Cheers
Seems the mare went to Frank and Susan's three time G1 winner Milkom at Girsonfield Stud last season. Have not been able to find anything more as yet.
TURBO LINN had a colt by MILLKOM in 2010 but was not covered for a 2011 foaling and does not appear to have been covered this year either. It could be that her paperwork has not been filed yet.
Right, some fun facts and figures for you from the RoM. The Top 10 covering stallions in 2011 were: STOWAWAY - 312 GETAWAY - 274 MAHLER - 269 OSCAR - 268 MILAN - 236 WESTERNER - 216 GALILEO - 214 SCORPION - 215 FLEMENSFIRTH - 202 DUKE OF MARMALADE - 184 It is worth noting that every single one of those stallions is based in Ireland, and 8 of them are National Hunt stallions. The stallion in Britain with the highest book was BLACK SAM BELLAMY (another National Hunt stallion) on 152, with MAKFI the flat stallion with the largest book on 147, 5 ahead of his sire DUBAWI. Stallions that have seen significant falls in their books include: DALAKHANI - 114 in 2010, down to 53 in 2011 KAYF TARA - 205 in 2010, down to 84 in 2011 ORATORIO - 181 in 2010, down to 28 in 2011 SEA THE STARS - 136 in 2010, down to 87 in 2011 It is possible that the connections of these stallions have decided to start being more selective about the mares covered by these horses, either on a "quality over quantity" basis or perhaps due to injury/illness. First Season sires books were as follows: ALFRED NOBEL - 99 APPROVE - 120 ARCANO - 123 ASK - 164 EQUIANO - 127 FAST COMPANY - 119 GETAWAY - 274 HELLVELYN - 71 LE CADRE NOIR - 41 LOPE DE VEGA - 130 LORD SHANAKILL - 128 MAKFI - 147 MAWATHEEQ - 42 MULLIONMILENANHOUR - 25 PACO BOY - 132 RECHARGE - 25 RIP VAN WINKLE - 150 SCHIAPARELLI - 58 SHOWCASING - 117 STARSPANGLEDBANNER - 64 THEWAYYOUARE - 148 VALE OF YORK - 116 VOCALISED - 36 ZEBEDEE - 161
Are such huge decreases in the number of mares covered usual? Are they expected? Are there other reasons? Take Oratorio for example. How can 181 'people' want to breed with him in 2010 and then a year later only 28 do? It seems ridiculous unless there is another explanation. Do you know if the reduction in Sea The Star's book was by choice? Worrying if a horse of that calibre can drop off so quickly.
I imagine that ORATORIO's decline will be due to his progeny not having had a good season in 2010. The falls that can take place are shocking. Sadly my boy has fallen to just 6 mares this year as he is just not producing the top level results that people want. SEA THE STARS was, I imagine, a reflection on his stud fee. People were happy to pay on the back of his success on the racetrack, but a year down the line and the sales figures were looking ropey for first season sires, so people went back to the stallions with proven runners. One way of telling whether the stallion is producing the goods is to look at his second book of mares and see how many mares have come back again, or if the owners of mares from his first book have sent different mares (indicating confidence). At a quick glance 22 of the mares that visited him in 2010 went back again, and owners of the likes of Darley, Juddmonte, Rabbah, Shadwell, Meon Valley, Ballymacoll Stud and the Niarchos Family sent him mares in 2011. I'm almost done with his list of foals so will put that up shortly.
Frightening how quickly a stallion's star can fall. Just goes to show how absolutely crucial that big name runner is in the very early days. Thanks PN, as ever, very interesting.
The following mares were covered by Sea the Stars in 2011, I have listed the result of those coverings as they are given in the RoM. To explain the terms used for those that do not know: âNo Returnâ means that the paperwork was not submitted to Weatherbys in time for inclusion in the book. It is possible that a foal may have been born abroad and the result filed with the stud book in that country, or that the mare did not produce a foal and the owner hasnât bothered to return the paperwork! âaborted earlyâ means the mare was certified in foal 40-50 days after covering but miscarried before reaching 5 months of pregnancy. âslipped foalâ means that the mare miscarried after 5 months of pregnancy. âdead foalâ means that the foal was either dead at birth or died shortly after. â(died)â means that the foal survived for at least 48 hours but died at a later date. âbarrenâ means that the mare did not get in foal. I have shown the mare, her produce, the owner of the mare and foal and a brief bit of background to the mare herself (I made these notes a year ago, so some may well have had updates, but I really donât have the time to go back through them all!). If the foal has already been named it is shown in capital letters after the date of foaling. 1. No one else got a mare/stallion they want to know about?! I'm normally snowed under with requests when I put this thread up!
Looking at the first season sire stats is it possible to see who has had a full book of mares? For example, the fact that Rip Van Winkle had 150 (a nice round number) to his name, does that mean it was a full book, or is it purely coincidence? Just interested to see who was 'in demand' and who wasn't. In your expert opinion, who do you think will prove to be the 'sires to follow' out of this year's freshman crop?
The problem is that no one knows what constitues a full book anymore. The magic number used to be 40, but those days are long gone. The best way of looking at it is to say, what were their race careers like? On the back of what they acheived on the racecourse would you send a mare to him? I'd say Shadwell were probably a little disappointed with MAWATHHEQ's book, on the basis that he was a G1 placed colt by a top stallion (Danzig) out of a half-sister to NASHWAN, UNFUWAIN and NAYEF. That is a stallion pedigree. Some studs set personal limits, but these are often not made known. I do know that OASIS DREAM was so oversubscribed this year that they could have filled his book 3 times over. In the end he covered 122, which (when compared to GALILEO's 214) seems pretty modest. In those circumstances would you say COOLMORE were cashing in or that Juddmonte were more concerned with careful management of their stallions?
So essentially it is a bit of an unknown. Does it also depend on their stud fee? Take the example you mentioned of Galileo and Oasis Dream. Is the fact that Galileo's stud fee is so much higher enough to deter the lower quality mares, whilst Oasis Dream's lower (though still expensive fee) still allows for a relatively high proportion of undesirable mares? For that reason Coolmore are able to allow more mares to Galileo, assured that the quality is there. In contrast Juddmonte might be pickier and only allow the highest quality mares through, reducing his book considerably.
That can come into it. You would hope that a high fee would put off the "bad" mares, but some people have more money than sense! There are a lot of formulas used to help you decide on which stallion your mare should visit. One of them is that you should never use a stallion whose fee is more than the value of your mare. So if your mare would fetch £30,000 at the sales you should only consider stallions with fees lower than this. I ought to point out, before the Darley Mafia get to me, that the figure I put up earlier in this thread for CAPE CROSS was wrong (I've now removed it). He actually covered 157 this year, so was on a par with last year.
So just to confirm, are these the offspring of Sea The Stars? Are they due to run as 2 year olds in 2012 then? Fascinating to see how the filly by Zarkasha and the colt by Zarkarva get on. I hope he is a success at stud!
