This isn’t about who I met, but Pele’s recent death reminded me of a topical story.
I got to know Colin Mclocklan quite well through work. Many more mature boarders will no doubt remember and probably know Colin (he seems to know everyone, presumably through sport). He has to be one of the most talented all round sportsmen to come out of this area. In the late 60’s/ early 70’s, he played semi pro football for Goole and Ferriby when they were good. He then had a stint in America. He was one of the best cricketers in this area and playing semi pro in the Yorkshire league into his 50’s for various clubs including Hull, Sheffield. Played squash for Hull. And was playing RU (I think into his 50’’s).
In my early teens, I was an avid reader of the Green Sports Mail, so he was probably at his peak around then, so was a bit of a hero of mine.
I first met him when we were paired together on a training course. I think we had to describe something interesting about ourselves to our partner who would then present to group to test listening skills.
    He described how when playing in America he played against Pele (I think was playing for NY Cosmos). He has a photo of the scoreboard reading;
    his team ’ 1 (Mclocklan)
    New York Cosmos 1 (Pele).
He had apparently managed to get Pele’s soap as a souvenir!
I started quizzing him about his sporting career. His list of players he had played for and against at both football and cricket was very impressive, but other stand outs were that he had bowled David Gower as well as hitting Devon Malcom for six! That’s a hell of a hat trick.
I was in total awe, and obviously passed the active listening test!!!!!
Oddly, it seems I may not have been the only person to be impressed. Years later, I learnt that he married the course facilitator.

Russel Howard is one of the most unfunny comedians i've ever wasted time watching. He cracks a supposed joke and then looks at the audience to say that's your cue to laugh, botulism is more funny than that ****.

Can’t stand the twat. When you have to take your equally unfunny mother on a road trip to keep your profile up it’s time to go.

Ha ha, thought for a moment you were referring to Prince Andrew! No, he's clearly not stupid which is why I posted the 'does it on purpose' bit.

Also Steve McLaren on the train down to Wembley in 2008 and Michael Dawson in the toilet at Wembley Stadium.
In the early 90s when Green Day played at the Adelphi they hadn't turned up so we decided to go home, walking down De Grey St a van pulled up and Billy Joe Armstrong leant out and asked us the way to the Adelphi.
Around a similar time Radiohead supported Kingmaker at Tower. Me and my brother and our girlfriends were the only ones dancing when Radiohead were on so Thom Yorke dedicated Creep to 'the 4 people who have bothered to dance'. Also got their autographs after the gig.

I met him a couple of times through a good friend of mine, who was his next door neighbour when he lived here. I wouldn’t pretend that I was ever close to him, but as you say he was clearly a caring and decent bloke.

Even though my mate wasn’t a massive football fan (and isn’t from round here originally so isn’t a City fan either) he used to regularly tap him up for free tickets for the players’ families’ seats if Rob didn’t have any family going himself and we met quite a few of the players from around that time as they’d often sit there too if they were injured or left out of the squad for any reason.

David Meyler I remember as a real gent, but my lasting memory is of sharing polite but friendly chit chat with a stunning young lady sat next to me watching us playing well but with no end product against ‘boro. After I turned to my mate who was sat the other side and commented that the 4th or 5th gilt-edged chance that he’d missed was evidence of why Jay Simpson wasn’t going to be our striker next season she audibly huffed and turned away with no further interaction. So I give you Mrs Simpson…

I was once on a bus and deano got on. He was having some quite loud 'bants' with the female driver. He also filmed and took some pictures for his social media. I took my own pic.

Good post Askew, I (and indeed my brothers through cricket) know Colin very well for over 40 years. He was at Hull Cricket Club when my late father was captain. Good bloke with hundreds of great stories of a sporting life well lived. The last time I saw him, I am pretty sure he had either married or was living with a pyschologist. Col would be a great case study into a 'winners' mentality. He was a fierce but fair competitor.

Yeah, I think it’ll be the same lady. From the courses she facilitated, likely to have come from (or gone back to ) psychology background.
Last time I saw him was in town, he was recovering from ops on that infamous limp. The ops had gone badly wrong and he’d nearly lost his life. Still very positive though. As you say, fierce competitor but couldn’t meet a nicer fella.
