hope it comes off. Although I could've just made it up and that knacker has just claimed it as gospel.

No offense or anything but why do we need a young midfielder as back up? We've got plenty of young midfielders. We need an experienced midfielder imo.

I've got to say, pisses me off a bit that Matete hasn't been given more of a chance tbh. Bit different to our other midfielders imo, alright not the greatest on the ball but has energy and tenacity. Two traits we've lacked in midfield at times.

For me it doesnt matter if its an experienced or a young midfielder its finding another one that can play the Evans role. We dont have defensive midfielders who can break up play n block passing lanes like evans does.

I know you then mention matete and i agree i would like to see him play a bit more but hes clearly not shown TM enough in training. Matete isnt disciplined enough to play the defensive midfield role.

My preference would be to sign someone like max bird, a player who is young but has good experience already

I agree mate, I like Matate alot and wish hed be giving more game time.
Sheff United was a fine example of what he does in the middle of the park with his tenacity, when given the opportunity. He won the ball and set up Gooch for his goal.

you provide a good service mate - you consolidate all the rumours you see / hear and post them simply as such. You don’t try to claim them as news yourself. It’s the Twitter accounts that see other news then post it as their own which need stopping. You’re just passing on rumours rather than giving them credibility and snowballing them.

I totally agree it's a defensive midfielder we need. I wasn't really thinking of Matete as a defensive midfielder, I see him as an out and out centre midfielder, who gets about the whole midfield. A ratter.

Just seems to me that whenever he's come on in a game we get a grip of the midfield more. It's our main weakness for me over the course of this season so far, whenever we've struggled it's because we're getting overrun, or too weak physically, in midfield.

So which exciting young prospects are we being linked with today?

Is today the day Stewart signs a new deal?

All very exciting and much more fun than being linked with players like Scowen or Darren Gibson

I really doubt we announce Stewart contract today. Not when tomorrow is Friday ;)

but in all seriousness as much as the evidence is looking positive, I’m still feeling pessimistic. I’m not sure tactically why he’d sign something during the window, at a time where a potential premier league move is possible. Clubs like Everton are one more injury away from panicking and bidding big for him in both salary and fee.

If he truly wants to stay and not move to premier league then that’s another thing. Which would be amazing.

He could sign today and be away next week in fairness contracts just secure the selling club a bigger fee these days, I’m resigned to him going in the summer regardless to be fair

Yeah get that, hard for him to get in ahead of Neil and Evans but im surprised he hasnt come on more this season as he must be a nightmare to play against.

Surely he will start on saturday, id start him n michut then have Ba ahead of them this weekend

Gets an increase in salary immediately plus the insertion of a release clause that protects the club but guarantees him a move when the time is right, not to mention a hefty signing on bonus. What's not to love?

Thing is, whilst the money is obviously important, you look at the clubs at the bottom of the premier league and you could argue there's a case for most of them to be left well alone.

Everton - absolute ****, manager and board under extreme pressure, crowd baying for blood
Southampton - seem lost and their manager is a Welsh midget that only does well in Luton
Wolves - not Portuguese, already bringing a new centre forward in
West Ham - Moyes as manager, already have multiple forwards
Bournemouth - new owners have promised to buy, but if they go down, they will struggle to come back up
Forest - already signed 1,348 players, looking to sign another 67
Leeds - seem well stocked up front, won't spend huge amounts
Leicester - haven't got the money unless they sell in the window

While I agree Stewart could miss out on a few months of premier league money, maybe he's looking longer term?

A few short months here on better money, then a move in the summer to a newly promoted team (on the up) or one of the survivors (optimism and joy they stayed up)

    Or

Take the money now, into clubs in panic mode with bad atmospheres, managers under pressure.

The agent would have been pushing for him to move at a lower transfer fee, as lower fee to Sunderland means more wages / signing bonus etc to player in negotiations .

BUT we may have stumbled upon an agent that puts his players wishes first

OR a player who makes the decisions, rather than his agent.
