Not looking good for the great man. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1704868/Pele-end-life-care-Brazil-legend
As rheinhold senior always said Maradona the greatest pffttt If he had a right foot and could head a ball he’d still be nowhere near Pele
Started his career in 1956 and I'm old enough to remember the style of boot, the leather paneled ball and shin pad size used. IMO he will always be the greatest.
The irony is the two most shown clips of Pele are of him missing. The Gordan Banks saved and dummy against Uruguay. But yes it's unbelievablely sad.
Brilliant footage. Hard to compare from different generations. But he was a generational 'genius', as Messi has been in mine (although I do remember a bit of Pele too!).
All done without fancy boots, and with a more solid ball, on pitches that were far from bowling greens, and with players pretty much allowed to hack him to pieces.
And almost always been the same weight. The weight was increased slightly about a century ago but it's remained at a standard weight ever since. Obviously they did used to carry more water so in practice they did become heavier in wet weather, but not all the time.
I'd be interested to see a modern player in a pair of old boots on a wet, muddy pitch, with a thug baring down on them trying to get one of the old balls to dip and swerve like the 99p Woolies specials of today that have been designed to deform to help.
Works both ways. A lot of attackers who were successful decades ago wouldn't be able to find space against the hyper-organised defences of today, and the defenders from that era would struggle in today's world where they can't just resort to violence to stop an opponent.
Fantastic image that Pele's just tweeted of him with his dad in 1958... please log in to view this image
