Slept on it. Still think it’s a ****ing ludicrous choice. Hope I’m wrong. The time to gamble on an unproven manager isn’t mid-season, in the relegation zone & with the youngest back 5 in the league. We need experience and a solid tactician with a proven record of improving young players.
Ahh, good to see you're warming to the idea then Can't pretend I am overjoyed either. I think he is a fantastic manager but not what we need right now, and a relegation fight with a extremely young squad is certainly not what he needs either. Let's hope we are proven wrong and that all of SR research and data analysis proves to be effective.
To be honest, I think this is what we are all hanging on to. IMO it is too much of a risk at face value for SR not to have done proper research into it - It is their £220+ Million to lose and they aren't stupid. I think we can all be wary, but have to trust the 'experts' in running their business. They wouldn't send it down the can for no reason.
The problem as I see it is that the potential managers we could realistically attract who could get us playing the style of football SR want us to play, aren’t experienced in the Premier League. That means they will have to make some sort of step up. Whether it’s Jaissle from the Austrian Bundesliga, Gallardo from the Primera División, or Jones from the Championship, none have experience in the toughest league of all. So, should we take a calculated risk on Jones, or go for someone like Dyche who wouldn’t play the way any of us actually want?
For sure. This is why I find it baffling that some have accused SR of being cheap. It makes no sense at all. Not only is it not actually a cheap option, as his Luton contract is fairly long, but why would SR risk relegation and the financial hit that comes with it to save a few million quid? The only thing we can say with certainty is that out of all the managers that would be willing to join us, Jones is Sport Republic's top choice and is being picked because they think he is the best option, not the most affordable.
The new Brighton manager came via Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk as much of risk, if not more, as Nathan Jones. That hasn't gone to badly.
Very interesting and insightful post from a Luton fan on our subreddit: https://reddit.com/r/SaintsFC/comments/yqkqs5/as_promised_elsewhere_a_luton_fans_take_on_what/ I’m warming to the idea, if I’m honest. Had dreams of an exciting name in global football coming over, and my initial reaction, like many, was “Errrrrrr”. But reading more into his career, and the fact that Rasmus Ankersen is behind the move (who’s is incredibly meticulous with these things), I am far less perplexed. Plus, he kinda looks a bit like the one true King, Stannis Baratheon
Who do you think meets your criteria and would come to St Marys? A read of this may put a different perspective on the not announced appointment of Nathan Jones.
Top half (I think they were 6th) and absolutely flying. That’s a totally different proposition both literally, in terms of points, but also intangibly in terms of attitudes around the club etc. You can’t compare.
OK I'm completely (assuming that guy knows his onions as much as it appears he knows his onions, you know, as if he favours a black and white horizontally striped collarless shirt, sports some stubble and a French accent, has a cheroot dangling from his lower lip and several strings of onions around his neck whilst cutting about on a vintage bicycle) sold now. Let's get in amongst them! A few wins and we'll be looking at the stars I tell ya!* *All inclusive gin may be involved in some or all of this post.
Did you read the "he will buy a big striker and play route one football for him to knocl it down" bit? If that is the case then keep him away from our club! Hopefully with additional resources he will play a system that allows the likes of ABK, Tino, Edozie, Lavia and co to develop into fine players.
Did you read the *gin bit? I'm just glad the decision on a replacement isn't mine. I'm even more glad us supporters aren't involved in the decision. No matter who gets the gig some of us will be unhappy. The proof is in the pudding and currently, none of us know if that's a crême bruleé or bangers 'n mash! We needed a change. Here it is. Let's just hope the big guy small guy hingmy goes as well as this.
I'd personally be quite surprised if we brought him in to lump long balls toward a nonexistent big striker. Doesn't make sense for a whole host of reasons, not least the fact that our whole model is predicated on convincing young players that we'll make them look good for potential future moves, something unlikely if we're playing an agricultural style of football. But his style should be adaptable to play with fast strikers rather than a big lump of a target man, I'd imagine. That's what Leicester did with their vertical passing scheme under Ranieri: use the channels as the release valve for quick counters, rather than hoping for knockdowns. The title-winning team was third from bottom in possession, but managed to release Mahrez and Vardy time after time by playing balls into space and generating high-quality scoring chances (and penalties) at a fearsome rate.
