Good Moaning ! Yes, liked Allo, Allo but loved the Two Ronnie’s Especially Ronnie Barker……. ( Makita designed their new cordless impact drill / driver based on his wife…. It has 21 torque settings, can operate underwater and the battery lasts 24 hours! ) That’s good night from me and it’s goodnight from him. Benny Hill was a family classic in our house, so too we’re Morecambe & Wise. Billy Connolly was f@&king brilliant, especially liked his road trips. Here in Oz, we have the Paul Hogan Show, which was always good for a laugh. Of course, The Bleeding Hearts Society wouldn’t allow any of that nowadays.
Lots of great choices above … of course Kenny Everett broke the mould … ‘Angry of Mayfair’, Sid Snot, Cupid Stunt … all on the best possible taste. Monty Python was a must watch in every way and Billy Connolly was side-achingly funny - the funniest I’ve seen live by far. And always had a soft spot for The Goodies too.
Reading these posts, it's hard to comprehend how many great shows and comedians we've seen. All, that I've heard of, bring back amazing memories. Do you think they'll play them in heaven when we die? (or maybe they'll play the first few seconds in hell as a punishment )
The programs I just never got... Mind your language Till Death Do Us Part It Ain't half hot Allo Allo I really really do not get Allo, Allo
I agree with you, Allo Allo is total ****e and could never get the adulation people give it…..still never could be as bad as “Mrs Browns Boys” which his probably the crappiest “comedy” ever to have graced a TV screen. I’ll add I wasn’t that impressed with Billy Connolly when I saw him live many years ago….3 hours without a break and many of the audience seemed bored half way through. “The Young Ones”, “The Dangerous Brothers”, “Filthy, Rich and Catflap” and “Bottom”….pure genius and still funny to this day….though I’m sure some will think it’s ****e
Grew up on Young Ones, brilliant tv - truly of it's time, and probably very relevant today. Saw Bottom live, the one they were stuck on an island with a nuke - hilarious. Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner two of the newer crop that stand out - there is some dross out there though....Mrs Browns Boys being top of the list. Do you guys get Still Game down there? Top comedy up here, ****ing brilliant
Mrs Brown's Boys...forgotten to add that. The most awful unfunny program ever. Is there anyone here who even finds it slightly amusing
Hi Beth. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 'Allo 'Allo was a send up of the three main protagonists (the French, the English and the Germans) back in 1940. It was a modernistic Hogan's Heroes, but in this case, not only belittling the German war machine, but also "self deprecating" our side (the allies) to get cheap laughs. In those days, I don't think they were trying to offend anyone in particular, they were offending everyone equally. Anyway, it gave me a good laugh.
Not sure about other cities, but never heard of Still Game in Sydney. Is that on the same network as Bracknell and Ellers? (eh, Stainesy)
Should add that you're right about The Young Ones. Effin' brilliant. Still remember telling my mates on the school bus about it when it first aired in Oz. Rik Mayall, what a talent. Pure comic genius. Sharp wit, great writer/performer and excellent delivery/timing. As I mentioned before, will be sorely missed. I think that show was one of the first to break the "third wall", at least that I was aware of. And I reckon that made it even better!
"One man's food is another man's poison". Some people like MBB. Probably why it's lasted so long. But you're right. It is a dog's breakfast and although I've watched it a few times, thinking it might get better, it DIDN'T, ... IMHO.
Michael McIntyre - most annoying **** on TV at the moment, but gets plenty of airtime - soooo not funny
It's on BBC Scotland, so very much doubt it's getting much airtime down under, except for some ex-pats. You'll get it on iPlayer maybe. Follows a group of old pensioners and their lives in a block of flats in Glasgow, the local pub (The Clansman) and the local shop. Sold out two weeks of the Hydro when they did the live shows (that's about 12,000 punters a night). Loads of stuff on YouTube
I really don't mind MM. I think it's his fast paced approach to comedy that gets me. If it's not funny, well at least it's over quick. I did like the segment in the Big Show, "Send to All". You get to know which celebrities know each other personally. And some, unawares, give out a bit too much "private" information, showing their real side. I know I wouldn't be giving my phone to MM if I was in their shoes.
