I'm not sure managing to salvage a situation and finish 5th, 13 points off the top two, with a side containing Grealish, McGinn, Tammy Abraham and Mings, is the reassurance he seems to think it is?
I was against getting rid of Farke and I don't really see the point of ditching Smith. What we need to ask ourselves is where we would be today had we not sacked Farke? He couldn't really have finished the season in a worse position than we did and this morning we are outside the play offs.

I wanted to keep Farke, too, but at this time last year we still hadn't won a game. Neither DF nor DS can get a tune out of this core squad. Is it recruitment, coaching, management? I don't know. Two seasons ago we had the amazing Oliver Skipp. This season Hayden was supposed to fill that gap but has been injured with the 18 y-o and untested Gibbs as his back-up. Gibbs looked good in the beginning of the season but has not progressed. Same with Nunes who has actually gone backwards.
It's rare for a manager to survive once there is a lot of talk about the possibility of him being sacked. Steve Bruce has been a good example this season - people were talking for a long time about whether he would be sacked, West Brom hung on and hung on, but eventually had to give in to the inevitable. There's a point of no return and I'm not sure Smith has reached that yet, but he's mighty close. If/Once he does reach that situation, there's no point dallying.
