The two best options were Mordaunt and Tugendhat.

Agreed. I think Ben Wallace will be stronger but it's definitely a labour party next in Government

You would expect so.... but if the polling is against the tories they will want to continue for as long as possible before GE.

In a few years time Liz Truss will be the answer to a quiz question - who was PM when the Queen died - and nobody will get it right!!!

Wallace is a good shout as is Tugendhat as @The Exile II says along with Mordaunt.

But again, it's about whether they have learned their lesson or the party politics within are going to decide the next leader. Sunak or Hunt would surely be too divisive.

My bet is Sunak next PM and there won’t be a GE until 2024

They can't get away with that. If the new leader is sensible, the first thing they will do is call one for May next year. Shut Labour up and give themselves 6 months to look like a viable candidate.

You might be right Flash, but with the majority they have I can't see any mechanism to force a GE, and if the polls are accurate, to voluntarily call one would be turkeys voting for Christmas

I am a bit of a novice but why have a GE? We vote for a local MP and an overall party manifesto dont we? We dont vote for an individual leader. The party gets a 5 year term to deliver, unless they opt to shorten it. Any conservative shortening it now would potentially consign them to anonymity. My sense is they will go back to basics now, elect somebody like Mordaunt and fill the cabinet with heavyweights and spend the next 18 months delivering as much as possible while pitting themselves directly against Starmer and Reeves at every opportunity, and we have already seen a glimpse of how that will go for them. Do this and get their conservative media back on side and make Labour look a weak proposition. Probably wont result in a win, but may make them a strong opposition and much reduced Labour majority.

I also dont know what it would mean changing governments now with Putin having lost the plot.

This is the issue. Labour are currently weak as piss and are only in a strong position due to chaos the Tories are causing themselves and the country. I watched the other day with dismay. Truss decided against answering the question posed by Labour and appointed Moudant to face them; she tthen ripped a new arse off Starmer . Reeves clearly is out of her dept and was made to look like a laughing stock by Hunt. The only credibility was from Chris Bryant when he called the point of order. i am still undecided on who i will vote for in the next GE; these two parties did little to convince me on Tuesday

I’ll give Truss her due she didn’t hang on long enough to collect her wedge, or did she?

We should just have a lottery for the next pm. £100 a head if you're interested. Winner can't be any worse and it'll clear a chunk of money to pay off the energy bill deficit.

Winner gets a few weeks playing politician and if they're no good, £115k a year for life.

No idea mate but i looked at the Public Duties Cost Allowance (PDCA) and it states that she is. I did not go into too much detail to find out if there was a qualifying period.

Aye but look what Truss done before that,
Are you saying she should take over at Forest and lead them to back to back European titles?
