James Pearce, The Athletic "At times, it looked like 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-4, but Jurgen Klopp was adamant it was 4-4-2 and he should know." https://theathletic.com/3658566/2022/10/05/liverpool-rangers-champions-league/
At this point in their careers I think you are probably right. no 10 in a 4231 = bobby. nobody else probably but they can obviously fill in. Firmino knows how to help in midfield. no 9 = jota or nunez LW = carvalho, diaz or jota RW - salah or elliott. Theres 6/7 creative attacking players for 4 spots. As you said in the midfield 2 you've 3 and you are ignoring milner (like the rest of us.) and this is clearly where the buying is coming. The youve 7 players for 4 defensive slots and only RB is under resources. I don't think we have the legs to press with 3 and once cm pushing on.
I'm finding it hard to be optimistic or pessimistic. On one hand, I think we are slightly better than before the break. Brighton was ugly for thirty minutes, but after that we weren't too bad .. and we did win yesterday. Arsenal aren't Rangers though, they're not some team from a third-world country that we can just bully. Nothing will surprise me in this game.
We can but do our best. Result v performance. If the performance is OK but the result goes against us it's better than looking bereft and losing. I'd take a 0-0 right now.
Funny but 442 conjures up memories of mike bassett football manger, incredibly old fashioned. True Jota didn't play like an attacking midfield, he was more free to do what he like, sometimes deeper than nunez, sometimes playing wide. Salah and Diaz definitely didn't play like the wingers of yore though. Maybe getting bogged down in exactly what the formation was is a bit pointless
It really is a bit pointless with the fundamentals of klopp systems to run about with freedom did salah run a line and drop back and help trent. yes. so he did a bit of a job there. did diaz help tsimikas, not so much cos rangers never got over there. who knows. it certainly wasn't big man and little man front 2 anyway.
Away to the Gunners on Sunday, Arsenal in good form and league leaders with 21 points and Liverpool 10 points, though Arsenal have played one game more. I can see five goals in this game.
