Football fans have been left baffled after discovering that Sunderland have a higher average attendance than Italian giants Juventus so far this season.
The newly promoted Championship side boast an impressive average attendance of 37,926 - while Juventus have only attracted 37,634 fans on average at home games. The Black Cats' huge number also puts them ahead of Napoli, Leeds, and Leicester.

Sunderland's average attendance is at a five-year high for the side from the north east after battling their way back into the second tier last season, and fans have loved the fact that Sunderland have a higher average attendance than the Old Lady.

Still thought we might be 40k at each game. Not having a dig, but where are the missing 6,000 from the PL days? Are there some people who just refuse to go if it's not a PL game?

Hopefully we top 40k on Saturday and that n turn pushes the average over 40k. Magnificent effort from us given the current economic climate

To be fair there'll always be local people, who just like football, who'll turn out to see Man City but not Rotherham ...

... and tbh I'd pop along to my nearest club to see Haaland play.

Our support, after the last decade, is incredible imo.

I don't see it as a dig. It is class seeing the place as full as it has been, because it was at point a few years ago where I was the only one in my row.

That average will creep up after Saturday too. Potential for 40k+ most home games if we carry on how we’ve started…

Hopefully we can keep a steady top a 30,000s what with the current climate and also Christmas round the corner, as long as we remain competitive people will turn out

Yeah, wasn't dissing the people who do go, just curious as to what stops someone supporting their team/going to matches. I was there all through L1 and am confident I would still go if we were in L2. I'm enjoying this season more than any of those 10 we spent in the PL

If we carry on like we are, I suspect that average will get steadily greater even though winter is going to be a right bastard on the finances.

We've been doing better than tons of teams above us in terms of support for a long time. We're great. Everybody's different though and I can see why we had less going when we were in League 1 than now although personally I enjoyed seeing us win most weeks.

A lot has changed since the halcyon days we could attract 50 to 60,000 + crowds regularly, but it could still be reached in time. Blanket coverage by the media and the price of actually going to a match has affected attendances everywhere ,considering this our attendances are truly amazing . I have often wondered how many passive supporters we have at present, I recon 100,000 could be an under estimate. they all would not turn up together of course some never , but adding 10,000 onto our present average is not out of the question if we can continue the steady progress currently being made.

We had quite a few students living on campus who attended games because we were in the Premier League.

There are more exiles than you can imagine mate, people go to Sunderland games from all over the UK and beyond. Convincing yourself, your partner, your travelling pals, that a 300 mile round trip to see Wigan at the SOL is a great use of time, money and effort, isn't easy.

It's a whole day away from home, at least £100 and a lot of effort. Shopping has to be done on the Friday might after work, cover for Saturday morning sorted, kids/grandkids put off until Sunday, etc, etc, etc.

Watching the SAFC stream is a doddle and costs a tenner.

Those who can walk to the ground, or jump on a branch bus, probably have no idea of how many people are still on the road when they're at home, with their feet up, watching the highlights.

I, personally, save my home trips for the business end of the season when the games become more vital ...

    ... I suspect I'm not alone.

I've often wondered what we'd get for a Wembley final or playoff if you could get tickets without the fuss. I've always thought maybe 70K but could well be more if you added in those who'd fallen away and the 'Wembley only' types.

Premier league were days when it was rife with free tickets. Back when they relied on a chunk of fans paying full whack so that Tommy sat in the seat next to you can get his "Tickets for nowt through the granbairns school". I knew loads of lads that could well afford to go but somehow knew someone that could get free tickets. I'll admit it was always a sore subject with me.Free match ticket then off to the town to spend 200 quid on drink. Absolutely fantastic for people struggling financially to go,but it was abused.

Aye, that used to rankle - got no issue giving tickets to a bunch of kids, but not for them to just pass them on to freeloaders

I've an image in my head of a supporter saying to his wife and kids as he leaves the house, 'Reet, I'm off to the match. Only use one bulb and don't switch the heating on while am out!'
