“Many Russians who now flee Russia because of mobilisation were fine with killing Ukrainians," Latvia's Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said. "They did not protest then. It is not right to consider them as conscientious objectors."

    good point

unfortunately for the Russian peeps trying to get into Finland

America abandoned the Vietnam war due to protests at home, and thousands of their young men refusing to be drafted. Maybe the same will happen in Russia.

Of course, it takes a lot more courage to protest in Russia - or Iran - than it does in many other places.

They have of sorts been covering this point today on the news, suggesting because Putin called it an operation, it suggested Russians were not fully aware of what was going on. Thus then Putin calls up 300k more troops and people then ask the question of how come, as it was supposed to be a liberation, what's changed with what you told us, to suddenly require 300,000 additional troops, who will just be like lambs to the slaughter.

Personally I think you are right Spurly, they should have already been asking these questions, being naive to the situation is no excuse for ignorance or maybe just plain commonsense. Russians may have heavier media restrictions then the West, but I'm sure like we do, they are more than capable of thinking outside of the box, about the real goings on.

The trouble with this though is that you can't hold the public to account for the actions of their leader.

As you've already mentioned, the Russian state media has given a blanket bias on why they are in Ukraine and the State has clamped down on any sort of protest with heavy sanctions. So even if you were able to get to the truth and then protest about it, you would have been taken down.

It's okay being an conscientious objector in a country where you're not going to be sent to the Gulag. But for most ordinary Russians, any form of dissent is met with the full force of the Russian state

A gunman has opened fire at a school in central Russia, killing at least six people and injuring twenty, Russian officials say.

Victims include pupils and a security a guard at the school in the city of Izhevsk, according to Russian media.

The incident took place at school number 88, which has almost 1,000 pupils and some 80 teachers.

The gunman has reportedly killed himself and the motive is unclear. Emergency officials are at the scene.

The school is in the centre of Izhevsk, a city of about 650,000 residents, close to central government buildings.

Teachers and pupils have been evacuated.

The gunman was reportedly armed with two pistols, according to a state MP quoted by the Tass news agency.

Not sure I totally agree mate. This is not the 70's anymore, where western Media would show Lada's on the streets of Russia and the weather was always dark and gloomy.

We are in the 21st Centruy now and a world of information technology, in 2021 a total of 19,370 visits were made to Russia by British Nationals, so they all carry an influence of knowledge with them.

In fact the media changed from the gloom of the 70's to showing a very modern Russia. I read a recent Human Rights document recently, and it suggested that Birtish Citizens and Russian citizens were no longer that far apart in freedoms.

We banned Russian media, Twitter and other social media platforms banned Trump. Protestors get arrested now in the UK for the most harmless of protests. The government constantly looking to change laws to make them even stricter.

I don't go with this character of Russians being naive to what's going on. Yeah dissent is met with a battering, but it was only a week or so ago, UK coppers were piling on top of some fella, who was innocently going about his business on a scooter, not his fault he didn't know the King was coming the other way.

The idea that Chinese and UK citizens have similar freedoms is laughable tbh .

The fella on the scooter deserved a kicking for sheer stupidity <laugh>

    Naah im not buying it

The Russian public knew exactly what was going on in Ukraine before Putin dropped the conscription bombshell on them

hence why those denying it in interviews were extremely vehement in doing so…actually praising Putin’s leadership in order to substantiate their claims….you know…trying too hard…that kind of vibe

Then there were the others who were looking into the cameras slightly nervous and refusing to comment either way…you know…trying too hard to ‘not say the wrong thing and disappear for good’…that kinda vibe

    basic psychology famz

    They fackin knew

I see your point, but there’s still a world of difference between protesting in the UK and in Russia.

Also, despite access to the internet etc, look at how naive folk in the UK were when they were told about the benefits of Brexit <whistle>

Funny how they 'supposedly' didn't know what was going on in the Ukraine, but the dumb fooks can seem to find their way to the Finnish border. Surprised they didn't need a white stick and a labrador.

I just love how everyone keeps making excuses for the Russians, I think you've been brain washed by western media mate, you really need to get out more and give those gay camping bike rides a miss, use your eyes and ears, instead of your butt hole.

Most Russians are very patriotic, and though it’s hard to get accurate polls, Putin’s Nationalist hard man persona was probably quite popular until recently. The idea of standup to NATO’s bullying of Russia undoubtedly played well to many ordinary Russians. The idea of being forced to die in a war against their own cousins and brothers in Ukraine, somewhat less so.
