It might seem a trivial thing at a moment like this, but imagine the organisation that went into finding 142 sailors all more or less exactly the same height.
I am no expert on the reasons for 24 hr coverage but I suspect that it is because millions want it, only thousands don't.
On a personal note I found that remark to be disrespectful and disappointing, however you can be forgiven if your attitude means that you have not been following what has been going on and don't understand the enormity and historic connotations involved. This is a unique situation and it is affecting the whole of the World, it means much to millions, your opinion counts, but have you wondered why so few are of the same mind set as you?
With the football scene being so depressing, I am finding that the pageantry and traditional pomp and ceremony to be a welcome distraction. Nobody does it better than the Brits, whatever the excuse.
Not going to say anything disparaging today out of respect for any of you who, in my opinion, have been whipped up into a state of hysteria by an over-egged, fawning media. But, don't try to patronise me, you know little about me, I feel that I have enough experience of life not to be influenced by this wall-to-wall television and radio coverage. I acknowledge that I'm in a minority and have pondered why so few people have a similar mindset. Have to say that I don't get it but then I can't understand why people are interested in what hat or dress Megan wears or how close Harry is standing to Wills, I'm not interested. As we used to say when I was in the forces "Move on"
Maybe we can be both. For the Queen/King and also think it has been a bit OTT in the media. That said, this is the first time in 70 years we have had the death of a monarch and the first with a modern media. I personally have been glued today to the screen, but not the last few days. Today IMO is history. The pomp and pageantry and protocol is what makes me proud to be British. Maybe I feel it more as I spend all my working life with Americans who have no history, class or decorum. People sometimes fear change and after 70 years where the Queen literally grew up as the nation did, getting a 70+ year old new monarch is change.
I have paid little attention to the coverage since the Queen passed away, but I have been very interested in today’s coverage, where there are things actually happening rather than people filling air for 24 hours. Also, the shot of the corgis waiting for the coffin to arrive at the top of the drive at Windsor…
Probably. As one of the thousands, I’m trying not to complain, but ye Gods - this feels like it’s been going on forever
I have avoided as much of the build up as possible and haven’t even turned my television on today. I feel your pain. The husband of a friend of mine is one of the multitude of camera operators, somewhere along the route, and he was only told yesterday that he “MUST” wear a black suit and tie, neither of which he owns. Thanks to the power of social media he was kitted out within a couple of hours, with someone even posting a tie through their letterbox, owing to them being en route to their home from Lincoln when he received the dress code message.
I don't like that at all, no respect whatsoever for the arsehole that handed out that name and shame the ****er.
Always enjoy ceremonials. Am especially interested when their historical roots are explained. I know they practice a lot...but still beautifully organised and faultless with 10 days notice. Windsor looks fantastic...would like to go there...together with all those foreign tourists no doubt adding it to their bucket lists as we speak. Bit of a 5 hankie funeral for me...but I’m a softy. Hope my son watched it for some clues about what I’d like
I've watched a lot of the proceedings and like you enjoy the pageantry. People queueing for hours and travelling from all over the country is not for me but I can understand it's what they want to do. It's not for me to say they're crazy or whipped into a state of hysteria if it's their thing, but even I can't believe millions want to watch the coffin and people passing around it throughout the night.
Didn’t watch all night or even close to it, but did pop on every now and then...just to check. No, I don’t know why
You make good sense, I don't know why people have done what they have done either, but it clearly wasn't orchestrated, it has all been spontaneous and through personal choice. The amazing thing is how it has been facilitated and controlled, with that many people and only a tiny number of indiscreet actions, it take a lot of understanding.
