in years gone by I’d listen to his voice and form the immediate impression that he was a stuck up posh twat.

Now that I’ve matured a bit I can listen beyond his accent and he’s actually a funny bloke with some great stories to tell.

Shame about the football being postponed, 100 plus grounds showing respect with 2 minutes silence and a loud rendition of the national anthem would have been a powerful tribute.

Each sport had their own choice to make.

Football could have stayed on like Cricket and Rugby, but they chose not too.

At first I thought all sport would stop because of the nature of the loss. But it seems Football and Boxing have fallen short while other sports are able to continue. What's so great and Cricket and Rugby that they should get the nod. Should've been all or nothing.

I'm pretty sure the royal commentators were saying that the government would never interfere with any decisions the FA made, but had strongly suggested football to stop.

I've just watched them talking about it on BT. The government told them the fixtures could go ahead and the royals had no objection. There was enough police to cover everything. The FA chose to cancel the fixtures.

Really disappointing decision from the football authorities imo. Full stadiums across the country, observing a 2 min silence tben watching the national sport would have been a fitting tribute.

The last time a reigning British Monarch died we were still greatly affected by a world war. The Monarchy was seen as having played a major part in guiding the nation through a time when our entire existence was in peril. The Commonwealth was huge and mainly supportive of the new Queen. As most people didn't have TVs, many not even newspapers, there wasn't the blanket coverage we have now. Anyone who wants to watch the funeral service will be able to and, at the same time pay their respects.

I really don't see how people watching a football match are, in any way, being disrespectful tbh.

Liverpool fans would have booed their way through it. It's worth cancelling it all just to avoid that.

I actually had this exact same thought. I'm sure 99.99% of fans would have been nothing but respectful no matter what there views on the monarchy but there's always a handful of twats who need to be controversial.

My thoughts exactly. They’ve booed the national anthem so many times why would the Queen leaving us make any difference to the ignorant individuals. (Would’ve used a different final word for that sentence ending on any other thread)

I believe, although can't find a reference to it, that the playing of games, was considered to be unacceptable under the Victorian rules of mourning. The Victorian etiquette surrounding such things is what forms the basis of what's usually acceptable these days. So it wouldn't necessarily be odd if it was banned.
The rules were different before the Victorian period.
Certainly, in the Edwardian period (as the link says), balls and dancing were forbidden during the mourning period and, as sport is considered an expression of joy, I'd imagine the same applied to sport.
However, there is nothing in the rules around mourning for the Royal family, published on the government website that prohibits sport. And, as we all know, attitudes have changed.

I disagree, let them show themselves up I say.

They want us to mourn their dead every year, it should be reciprocated ...

... sadly a whole minute's silence would be a personal best for the average Scouser.
