I have to say the people whinging about having one game called off out of a mark of respect for a lady who gave 70yrs to the country in unrelenting dedication is sickening to me, I dont give a flying fk about minority sports like RL, not calling their games off tbh, I for one am glad that football as a sport has done the right thing. She deserved all our respect !

I think they're worried about people singing 'Lizzie's in a box' or the minute silence not being honoured.

I don't see the problem with a postponement, and I've not heard a reasonable reason why they shouldn't be postponed.

    Grassroots shouldn't be though

I'm no Royalist either, but surely everyone realises that they bring in substantially more to the economy than they spend?

I'm presuming you'll be staying in for the whole weekend, no television, no booze, quietly paying your respects?

I don’t think people are whingeing as such. The vast majority of people on here have been very respectful assuming you have read all the posts on the threads? It’s more about understanding the logic in the decision. I also don’t really see how it makes it respectful to call games off day so that’s down to people’s interpretation of what constitutes respectful behaviour. As many posters have said, I don’t think it’s what the Queen herself would have wanted based on her character/love of sport/life goes on mentality and also how it would have been so much better to bring football fans together to show their respect in grounds across the country. In society, people gather together to celebrate happy times and to reflect on sad times/events. This immediate opportunity has now been lost. No one is doubting (mainly no one) her unrelenting dedication, courage and resilience to our country in her role as Queen. So not really sure why you are ‘sickened’. Your disgust should be aimed towards tweets like Trevor Sinclairs not for people debating whether the matches could/should have gone ahead today.

Is it so bad to show some respect for a beloved monarch by calling off one round of fixtures . Like golf called off one day of play, like cricket did the same, yet some wish to put their 2 penneth in just to be cnuts in my opinion. For thr record I am no royalist btw, but I do recognise a woman who practically gave her life to the country.

That money would still come in without a physical monarch. But let’s not get into that as this is a football thread

You’ve replied to my post but you haven’t responded to what I said. Some people think it’s right to call the games off and others don’t. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It doesn’t follow that you don’t have respect for the Queen because you hold either view. It’s about the reasoning for that view.

I make no apologies for being a Royalist but feel that respect could have been shown today at Football matches up and down the Country. It was an ideal opportunity for the footballing community to show the Royal Family just how much we cared for Her Majesty.

Of course there was the possibility that a small handful of ignorant morons may have saw it as an opportunity to disrespect the life and dedication of a wonderful women but that possibility remains when the Footballing authorities finally allow games to take place?

If that is the reason for the decision, then that’s poor. You shouldn’t base a decision based on what a small minority may or may not do.

The football being called off is hardly a surprise.

It is a prisoner to the media woke agenda and has to be seen as doing the right thing.

Would i rather be watching City on ifollow this afternoon? Of course!

It sounds like Tuesday match will still go ahead so its not going to give our new players and those coming back from injury that much additional preparation time.

Respect is one thing, but the Queen did realise a few times of the monarchy becoming out of touch with the public and did take some steps to modernise.

Most of the 12 days is nothing about the Queen apart from the funeral. Its mostly about the pomp and traditional ceremonies associated with transitioning to a new king.

This is the stuff that should become low key as the world has moved on in the past 96 years and the monarch doesnt hold the significance in peoples lives that it did.

I'm not sure what the reason for the decision was,my personal opinion is that there may have been some fear that any disruption may have reflected poorly on Football in general.

Ultimately the authorities probably made the decision to stand out from the crowd and thought it was the right thing to do but as DBT has stated they were damned either way...

What’s wrong with you choosing to show your respect the way you see fit & allowing others the opportunity to choose how they wish to show theirs?

Why are people voicing a different opinion to you ****s?

Cancelling the games was the wrong decision because it takes away people’s right to choose.

Martin Samuel makes a similar point. And, given the cowardice and unwillingness to give a ruling by the relevant government department, gives a good reason for dismissing calls for there be a government run football regulatory body interfering in football.

Since returning to games from covid, there’s been all sorts of issues regarding fans at football games. Those sneaking into the Euros final and the scenes surrounding that, people invading the pitch at many other games and hitting players, even the alleged racism at our last home game (and I know, that idiot doesn’t represent any of us) or the Sheffield Utd smoke bomb being thrown into our disabled section in the East. As much as we hope the perception of our sport changes in the media, we have this small minority continue to “prove them right”.*

It does feel as though the authorities felt it would have been better to sit this one out than risk minute’s silences not being observed or chants offending/being out of taste.

    * I don’t think they are “right” but I mean continue to fuel their claims and give them more ammunition to beat us over the head with. Giving them content to create headlines with and garner the most attention even when the vast majority of us don’t behave anything like it.
