I won't lie, i'm strongly against the monarchy and any form of hierarchy based on people's bloodline and ancestry but this is not the time or place for protest. She always seemed like a kind and decent human being but she isn't a special person to me although I respect people who will mourn her. As with anyone that passes my thoughts are with the family at this time... R.I.P. Elizabeth...
Exactly my feeling. As a republican the death of the queen puts you in a conflicted position. It’s always sad when anyone dies, a lot of people respected her and she did what was asked of her right up until the end. Now isn’t really the time for me to give my views on the monarchy.
Quite likely that it will be off next weekend too, as they don’t want to host games just before the state funeral on the Monday.
Personally, I would have played the games this weekend and had tributes to The Queen at all grounds and then postponed next week ahead of the state funeral. But I can understand why they've called this round off.
The decision is made. We should take a leaf out of the late Queen’s book and accept the decision with grace and dignity. Health warning - don’t go on Twitter; there are some truly awful comments on there. I’m biased I know but I like to think most Saints fans are much better than that.
This is a lovely tribute from the great John Sweeney, back home from reporting from the front line in Ukraine
Cant say I agree with it, I don’t see how it is respectful and I think it teaches people a bad psychological method of dealing with death and grief. Seems odd that we have learnt so much about how to healthily deal with death in the last 70 years, but for a Queen who is widely credited with modernising the Monarchy rather than celebrate her life we resort back to enforced wallowing on her death. Many people will now be taught that the ‘correct’ response to death will be to shut down, I’m actually quite aggravated by this approach.
I don't agree with it, but I'm certainly not angry or aggravated by the situation. For a start, it was the PL and the clubs choice to postpone, not the government or the Royal Family. So no one's forcing anything on anyone. People are simply keen to show their respect for a wonderful lady who dedicated her life to public service. I don't agree with the way they're going about it, but I understand it.
What on earth has it got to do with Steve Parish and Patrick Viera? I hate the way everyone has to have an opinion!!
Given that this country is a monarchy, without wishing to be rude, I feel some of you have underestimated the importance the death of a monarch is. One of the conditions of having a king or queen as head of state are the protocols and ceremonies associated with it. These ceremonies are not optional, if you are a monarchy the authorities have to follow convention. Of course, what the general public do is optional and the weekend's football could have gone ahead but once the ceremonial details were announced and seeing as she was patron of the FA, it is clearly seen as a fitting tribute to suspend the fixtures. Personally I think it is about the right level of respect for her position as Queen. This thread is not the right place to discuss why people here are republicans but I'm interested to hear their views on why they are. Maybe on the rabbit hutch would be better.
I have read these messages on here with considerable interest. It is indeed an end of a chapter ofhistory for this country - the end of the second Elizabethan Era. Its so pleasing to read the recognition of her devotion to our country amd its people, irrespective of differing views of the value or relvance of the monarchy. For the record, l am a royalist and l make no apology for it. May God rest her soul.
I can now see that what I wrote can be read in two ways and I apologise for that. What I meant was I would like to hear the republican's point of view but here is not the place. I've put a post on Ralphs Rabbit Hutch so that people can put their points for and against if they wish.
Great points. For me, personally, I wouldn’t have cancelled the fixtures. But I do think it’s a fantastic gesture and I appreciate the reasons behind it. Many fans are complaining on social media… but the truth is some things are bigger than football.
On the other hand... What a load of horseshit. It's 2022 FFS. The whole world shouldn't shut down for days on end because a 96 year old died. Those pathetic enough to worship the monarchy can grieve should they wish and there'll be plenty of opportunity to do so. It shouldn't affect the lives of everybody given many don't really care too much. Her life is worth no more than any of ours. Given the so called 'woke' culture today I find it truly baffling that we promote inequality so highly as a positive thing.
