My family came to this country before the first world war fleeing religious persecution. My grandfather fought in that war, my father in the second. Later I also served and many decades ago took this oath:

Most of you by your comments would regard such a commitment as ridiculous and out of time. Personally I have never forgotten the debt that my family owes this country. I also happen to think that a constitutional monarchy is a much better political system than it has any right to be, given the excesses of the presidential system in some countries. So excuse me if I happen to mourn the loss of the head of state.

Long live the King.

I respect your right to your view...but other have different histories...and consequently, different views.

To see the failings of a hereditary monarchy, all one needs to do is imagine that in 1936, the fascist sympathiser, Edward VIII had remained King. What then for those, like my ancestors who came to this country to escape persecution for their religion?

Hereditary monarchy is an anachronism that serves only the privileged in this country well. I admired the Queen, but with her passing, it's time this country had a proper constitution and system of government.

I agree with you in principle, but I'm dreading the alternative to what we've got, honestly.
You just know that this country's going to vote in another bunch of thieving scumbags to replace it.

Are there penalties then?
"There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations."
Probably for Man Utd and Liverpool. <whistle>

Makes you proud to live in a democracy, should I say 'Thank the Lord' that seems to cover it.

So much of what has allowed the scumbags into power is done via our unwritten constitution. It is long since time to grasp the nettle and remove the right of the privileged few. Until we do this, we are ****ed as a modern nation.

I don't think it'll change much, to be honest.
We'll just elect the privileged few on the say-so of some of the other privileged few, anyway.
We don't have a democracy, just the vague appearance of one.

I'm including PR as an integral element of a modern system of government. There's an awful lot of stupidity out there, but it's spread across a wide range of views. If we never got another single party government, we might actually have one that is made to be interested in the future of the country as a collective...?

It would be a radical departure.

WE are the least democratic country in Western Europe with the worst employment conditions, the lowest pensions, the most expensive railways, and so on and on. The people (particularly the English people) And my DNA informs me that I am 97% English, the other 3% is Viking by the way. The English consitently vote for their own persecution by electing Tory governments.
If we had a proper democracy with proportional representation and an elected 2nd chamber we might move on from 18th century. Just because most of the rest of the world is even ****tier does not mean I should not want our **** to change.

****ing pathetic. Honestly. Whole country being forced to go into ‘mourning’ when most people don’t care enough.

Are they gonna reimburse people’s travel plans, hotels, tickets etc?
It's official now.

I don't even see it as being about caring enough.
There's no connection between the Queen dying and football.
I have no idea why one thing means the other is cancelled.

The (stupid) counter narrative to this is that the Queen dying is bigger than football, it’s a time for national mourning and that everything apparently needs to be put on hold so we can dedicate that time to commemorating Her Majesty…

I can’t believe people think this way, but for some reason, many people do. <doh>
