Mind you, Cambridge fielded basically a 2nd XI Still, a good solod professional performance from Saints
Shame as it doesn’t really help with deciding how close some of the youngsters are to a PL appearance
Enjoyed that. Away end was bouncing pretty much the entire 90 with a few old favourites coming out towards the end. Payne was good, looked sharp and overlapping well. Ballard looked a threat with his movement pretty much as soon as he came on. Was a great moment to get his goal right in front of us all. "He's One Of Our Own" got a few outings for both of them. Generally a very comfortable and very controlled performance. Even their moments of pressure didn't feel threatening. Was nice to watch a Saint's match with no accompanying feeling of jeopardy. Only disappointment is Norwich getting knocked out, was hoping for a 'home' tie in the next round. COYS.
First half it looks like Valery was playing LB and Payne was RB. Can anyone at the game confirm? Maybe some sort of inverted-fullbacks experiment from Ralph?
I think he got most of his appearances at RB last year (Small generally played LB for the U23s). Have no idea if he's naturally right-footed, but the cross for the goal certainly looked like the work of a right-footed player.
Carabo must be so chuffed to be sponsoring such a prestigious competition We’ll all be buying their products* when we can’t get the real thing *Whatever they are (at least it’s not gambling)
Your sarcasm notwithstanding teams take the competition a lot more seriously the closer they get to Wembley and we'd all be delighted if we won it.
As long as we have KWP I guess it doesn’t matter too much whether Payne is RB or LB. If he can play both too then great. Was sure I read that he was naturally left-footed but could easily be mistaken.
First world problems but I notice the BBC didn’t bother to do line ups or match stats for our game, they have for pretty much everyone else.
I seem to remember a 17 year old scoring his first senior Saints goal in an FA Cup game v Coventry. What happened to him?
You are correct, Valery started at left back and Payne right back, in the 2nd half when Payne ran out of steam and was subbed, Djenepo who was already on, in an advanced wing back role, stepped in to left back and Valery went over to the right. There were plenty of good crosses from both wings throughout the game, just needed someone in the box to take advantage.
