At the end of the day , Chelsea lost because they didn't put their chances away. Sterling and Havertz had great opportunities. edit: Chelsea didn't win because................................
It was a draw, although it felt much like a win to us. For all Chelsea's expenditure this summer and for many years prior, their front line is currently made up of players whose finishing ain't all that. Sterling is notorious for missing gifts and Havertz is no better. Mount isn't a heavy goalscorer either. If they don't resolve that, they won't significantly improve. City and Liverpool have forwards who will score 20+, no problem...and will finish above them as a result.
https://www.skysports.com/football/chelsea-vs-tottenham-hotspur/stats/464649 A shot on/off target ratio of 0.5 is poor. For contrast : - last week they had a ratio of 2 - Soton last week had a ratio of 0.4 - Spurs had a ratio last week / yesterday of 1.33 and 2.5 respectively
We also had two other clear chances to Kane & Son so in fact as much as it might pain Chelsea it was Spurs who should have won not Chelsea. The aim of the game is to score goals, not create pretty passing or even ball domination. Nobody wins with possession you just have to put it in the net. Good examples of this are Chelsea v Bayern Munich 2012 and Notts. Forest v Hamburg 1980.
You had the lion’s share of possession but didn’t create all that much. The only real clear cut chances were the second goal and the Havertz miss. We ended up with more shots on target anyway. I think (and it’s an obvious thing to say) that you still lack cutting edge in the final 3rd, though most teams will find it difficult to break us down when we’re settled in 3atb. As for the refs, a few things went both ways. Both teams have something to complain about. I know you’re not saying it but this whole conspiracy thing is ridiculous though.
Tuchel suggesting that Anthony Taylor should have refereed his last Chelsea match... Now being investigated by the FA for it. Who does he think he is...Sir Ferguson?
Given that Tuchel is German, and the nature of the supporters of the club he is manager of, Taylor may find himself on a train journey to a place of "evacuation" ...
Passmap time please log in to view this image You can see how much Chelsea's gameplan relied on shutting down our left flank, with Son shoved into the centre looking for the ball while Sessegnon is playing deeper than Davies, and Davies isn't getting the ball up to Bentancur either - and watching the game, where they had James, Leftass Cheek, Kante, Mount and Havertz always doubling up on Son, it's no wonder that Sess got the same treatment, and it's even more obvious looking at their passmap please log in to view this image The interesting part is that our right flank, where Deki and Emerson are breaking through, demonstrates we had an inkling of how Chelsea would set up as they played the exact same way against us multiple times last season and (on paper...) we had a way to offset that which we didn't pre-Deki, hence Cucurella is tracking back so much - but it also demonstrates that Bissouma would have been a better choice in the starting xi as our pivot is mainly recycling the ball among themselves and we needed somebody to push through the middle to ease the pressure on our left flank and also link the midfield to the forward line as Kante would need to move into the middle to compensate
Also, has anyone ever been sent off in the Premier League for a pretty mild hair pull? I'd suggest that this is a more obvious example, which has curiously gone unmentioned: please log in to view this image
We have our problems for sure but outside of the two controversial goals we faced only one real threat the entire match (the chance Kane should have converted). Anthony Taylor for sure dislikes Chelsea though, it's as blatant as Graham Poll. I don't think it's a conspiracy per se but when a disproportionate amount of refs come from the NW of England it would be naive to assume there isn't subconscious bias at some level. Regardless it is what it is and no point moaning about it now - we will have to regroup - both teams put a lot of energy into that game.
Agree with where the refs come from, it’s surprising so many are from the NW. Maybe their programs are better in terms of training and promoting referees through the ranks, I don’t know. Glad we have the best part of a week to recover now tbh.
And the one Son should have put away. And the one Sessegnon should've scored. He's an Arsenal fan. Sorry, Altrincham. Altrincham. Definitely Altrincham. There's literally dozens of them
