Your first two words give the game away. Also I was very lucky to make 30, and don't expect to make 80.
I know. That is why I mentioned those teams. I was off same estate as you. You had to be decent to play for those 3.There weren’t any junior teams until Brid Rangers started in 1980.
Not wishing to take anything away from the Women’s fantastic achievement, but I do wish the media would catch up with their “no English football team have won owt since 1966” ****. The Englands mens U17 and U20 teams won their World Cups in 2017, and have won the Euros. The U21s have won the Euros in the past. the best thing about this Women’s tournament is seeing the enthusiasm and involvement of the young girls watching. Finally they’re seeing that yes football can be for them too. More grass roots support for the sport can only benefit both adult forms in the long run. Well done Lionesses.
Sorry! Didn’t read it properly. Yes there was nothing in those days for the girls And for a long time after. A friend of mine coached one of the first, in fact it could have been the first girl’s team, and they had to travel to get a game or play visiting teams who wanted a weekend at the seaside. There wasn’t any competitive football for boys either until Brid Rangers started in 1980.
A peak audience of 17,400,000 last night, nobody would have believed that possible five years ago. Edit - 18,000,000 watched in Germany as well.
They think it’s all over.....no, this is just the start!! Congrats, well done Lionesses. Legends. please log in to view this image
Not taking anything away from the win, but as someone else mentioned up thread, the men won the Euros in 82, 84, 2010 and 2014 as well as the World Cup twice in 2017. My guess is that the women just weren't listening at the time. Again, not knocking their achievement, but I have been amused to read comments from people bemoaning the lack of support for the womens game, when they've never been to a match in their lives.
I’ve been watching the Lionesses in pretty much every major tournament since a teenage Karen Carney scored a last minute winner in the 2005 Euros in England, but what they and this tournament has achieved in 2022 is transformative….this could be the rocket that will explode the Women’s game in this country. Got a bit emotional at the final whistle….to see a senior England team win a major title is something that hasn’t happened in my lifetime, but this England team could win a lot more with Weigman as coach and the talent that is in this squad. So many great moments in this tournament…Mead’s hat trick in the trashing of Norway,Stanway’s screamer in extra time against Spain,Russo’s backheel nutmeg through the legs of Lindahl in the semi,Toone’s chip for the first in the final,Kelly’s toe poke to win it. It’s been truly memorable. Can’t wait to see what we can do in the World Cup down under next summer. Anyway, over to the men and Qatar this winter….
