Who was it Short or Donald who refused to invest in the woman’s team resulting in the loss of players and being kicked out of the Top league?
Loads of the Sunderland wimmin team played for England and some still do (Scott, Bronze, Mead) We had a top wimmins premier league squad.
well done the lasses...was always going to be a tight game i thought but some of our passing was dire mind, maybe the nerves but they stuck at it and got the result in the end...obviously a jill scott bullet to win it would have been the perfect ending. not lost since that new coach came in, wonder how long they can keep it going.
At one time only three or four years ago, almost half of the England Squad had passed through our Accademy. SAFC had the most efficient scouting network in the NE and brought the youngsters in from all over the region. Lucy Bronze from Lindesfarne and Beth Meade from whitby, for example. That coverage was not replaced after we were 'demoted', and it's probable that some talented youngsters missed out because of this. PERHAPS, the present Owner will look to turn that particular clock back.
I guess thats the picture that will be on every back page tomorrow, perhaps even some front pages. A great spontaieous gesture, and I suspect it made most of us smile. (For older readers, Mary Whitehouse must be spinning like a top in her grave)
A bit of trivia for you. You may have noticed that Jill Scott got a big hug from Prince William. It seems that they are old friends, ever since she wiped him out during a Charity Match. It seems that The Heir To The Throne still carries the scar, and it's something of a running joke between them.
Meado wins the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament. Well done Beth and a big Up Yours to Phil F*ckin Neville!
Biggest ever attendance for a Euro final including men's football. That's got to be healthy for the women's game. Probably had decent viewing figures on tv I'd guess.
I maybe wrong but weren't the ladies team denied admission to the first Women premier league even though they qualified to, or was that because the club wouldn't let the go professional and why all the players left
I didn't watch the match, or the presentation, but there must have been one . . . . which probably looked like this
