I am actually quite happy that I have missed most of Glorious Goodwood. From a betting point of view it has not been a glorious meeting in any respect in recent years as the rain has always showed up and soaked the form book. This year it has stayed dry but I looked at Wednesday’s card for all of thirty seconds with four odds-on shots in seven races. Having been otherwise occupied on Thursday, I only looked at Friday’s results at about 5pm to discover that a couple of mine had been out, one was out with the washing in the Golden Mile and the other arrived too late in the King George; so money saved.

Numerically, the HQ card barely looks worth consideration with a load of single figure fields with short-priced favourites.

The sponsors will be disappointed that the Stewards’ Cup consolation race has only attracted twelve but the handicap good thing Lethal Levi will have made a few go looking for a £12k race that they can win rather than get too close to Karl Burke’s horse for second and getting hammered by the handicapper.

The Lillie Langtry looks like a competitive race but is this really a Group 2 in terms of quality? It seems quite easy to narrow it down to three or four probables but I can easily find reasons not to back them all. Forbearance won a couple of races last year at a lower level but has done nothing this year, Emily Dickinson has only won a maiden race and her fourth in the Irish Oaks does not look anything special, whilst the form pick Sea La Rosa might have been flattered by her proximity to Free Wind in the Lancashire Oaks and Viola did nothing for the form of her debut win at Haydock with a well beaten third in a Listed race at HQ.

The fourteen furlong handicap at 2:10 has a couple of ponderable factors. Trawlerman won a valuable race on the kitty litter, then made no show in the Duke of Edinburgh at the Royal meet when joint favourite and was similarly a no show over today’s trip at HQ. It should surely be a lay on the exchanges with headgear applied. Cemhaan was ahead of the Gosden horse at Ascot when chasing a hat-trick and previously beat Soapy Stevens, Valley Forge and Golden Flame at HQ at this trip and needs a career best today. Valley Forge looks like a significant player as he beat Golden Flame on his penultimate start before a respectable seventh in the Pitmen’s Derby and now drops back to the trip over which he won the Melrose last term. Bague D’Or comes in on a hat-trick after winning small field events at HQ and Ascot and has not been excessively treated by the assessor having not won by large margins, so with only one below him in the weights he has a good chance. It would be fair to say that this has not been the greatest Goodwood for the Johnston barn – plenty of runners but not a great return. SOAPY STEVENS pipped Red Flyer last time at HQ (Trawlerman tenth, Hms President fourteenth) when the runner-up was 3lb badly in and is now worse off; and won a valuable two mile handicap at Chester before that so lines up today on a hat-trick and I am hoping that he is the one to complete it as I expect stablemate Golden Flame to make the running.

Afternoon all, agree with QM about todays racing although plenty of winners to be found and of course I will try and find them. Not really found a standout bet for whatever reason but I will have a bet on the following who are running well at present with many wins behind them:

    1.40 Good LETHAL LEVI Evs
    2.17 Don SHERDIL 3/1
    3.00 Newm TEMPERIZE 13/8
    4.55 Thi SPANGLED MAC 4/1
    6.55 Ham WICKYWICKYWHEELS 3/1

Backed BOROUGH in the opener at Thirsk last night at bigger odds curtesy of Grade One’s post.

    Good luck all :)
