What evidence is there to suggest that we would 'find the 30m' if we wanted him? I don't think we were ever going to pay that much for a single player this Summer when we had so many signings to make. Expect one or two more at the £10-15m mark and then a loan.
Yeah I don’t think signing him was ever on the cards for us because of how expensive he was always going to be. Like I said, if Chelsea aren’t dealing at £25-30m then that’s way beyond our reach. Given the amount of players we needed, we weren’t going to be looking for established Premier League players. They’re just too dear.
Ajax have paid 20 million + for Calvin Bassey from Rangers, who apparently has had one good season in Scottish football. Before that he was unable to nail down a place in the team or break through at Leicester. I’d hope to get a lot more than a one season wonder for that money.
Chelsea are pretty light in the striker department at the moment. I don’t know what they have planned in transfers but if they do buy someone and stick with Werner then Broja might be loaned out again
The minute you walked in the joint I could tell you were a man of distinction ... however you may need to edit Calvin’s surname
Right there in my post Libby, my own gut feeling otherwise known as none at all . We have in the past paid 22-23m for the likes of Ings and Vesty!! (did we really???) ..so I could see us breaking that ceiling for a player who was on fire for us last season and really wanted to be here. Neither of those things eventuated so that was my point more than what we would have spent. Ralph has come out and said its the most expensive signing we will need to make so I don't think the club is looking for bargain basement unknowns at the moment and who knows what that statement will eventually mean.
Armando Broja flying back to the UK after agreeing personal terms. Heading towards a £30m fee for a permanent move to West Ham.
Boo. Would have rather he stayed at Chelsea than gone to West Ham. I wonder to what level we were interested in signing him permanantly and how much our maximum would have been. A large proportion of that £30m fee is for his potential so it is a risk, but not a huge risk to West Ham who spunk away money for fun anyway. Good buy for them, annoyingly.
Good buy for West Ham. I liked Broja a lot, but we really aren't in a place to be able to spend £30 million+ on mostly potential at this stage. Him and Antonio upfront together would be a real handful.
Bear in mind that our coaching and management team probably know more about Broja: skills, attitude, drive, willingness, dedication... than almost anyone - possibly even more than Chelsea given that he was away from them for his latest season. It looks very much like we didn't value him as highly as West Ham. Our team may be right. Vin
